Historically Black colleges and Universities have a history of giving many students the opportunity to excel further in choosing a career. HBCUs were “invented” in the year 1837 to help free blacks to become teachers. HBCUs were founded primarily to educate African Americans. Churches and other organizations recognized the limited opportunities for blacks and founded many of the early historically black colleges and universities. By 1890, over 200 colleges were founded to serve black students in furthering their education. 17 all-Black public colleges were founded in between the years of 1890 and 1899. HBCUs opened many doors for a lot of famous African American leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Oprah Winfrey, Rosa Parks as well as many others. Famous black leaders paved the way for minorities to make a difference in the global economy. By attending an HBCU, minorities now have the opportunity to compete in today’s global economy. In attending an HBCU, he or she has the opportunity to experience and learn life long lessons that would better them in the future. People come from all quarters of the nation to attend a historically black college. Because of the black college, social networks are developed. In connection to networking and competing in today’s global economy, some jobs require to know connects in the business world. Being that today’s global economy is becoming more challenging, demanding, and competitive, HBCUs prepares students to face the real world. HBCUs are driven by the demand for the unique educational environment that only a historical black college can provide. Students tend to choose an institute for higher education for various reasons. Sometimes students choose institutions based on family traditions. Some look at the schools reputation, while others look at the affordability. Majority of the students choose an institution based on if they would obtain a better job by graduating from a particular school. HBCUs possess all the qualities and more that a student would look into when choosing a college to attend. Black colleges provide an education that is suitable to all job requirements. At historically black colleges, students not only learn about their perspective major but they learn how to deal with real life situations. Being in a surrounding that students can relate, enables them to learn effectively . Over 300,000 students of all nationalities choose one of 103 HBCUs as their guiding light to study in their desired field. It is said that if attending an HBCU, students are less likely to achieve or become successful at a career, then at a private institution. Over the years historically black colleges graduates has proven this theory to be false. Many graduates of an HBCU have become just as much successful as any other private institution graduate. It is shown in these motivated students of today that historically black colleges can also compete in today’s global economy. In today’s global economy, businesses are becoming more competitive. In response, job positions are becoming available to those who are capable of getting the task finished. At HBCUs, students are prepared and trained for any obstacles that come their way. The graduates that HBCUs produce offer their most valuable assets to their place of employment and that is their knowledge. This is why HBCUs will never be indispensable.
