The offering of Higher education opportunities for African American and Hispanic students, before the civil war, was virtually nonexistent. The few, who were fortunate enough to receive schooling, sometimes had to study in a very informal and hostile environment. In many instances some students were even forced to teach themselves entirely. The implementation of abolishing slavery and reconstructing the South constituted a major improvement in how minorities would be educated from this point forth. I sincerely and strongly believe that Historically Black Colleges & Universities should continue to support the needs of African American and Hispanic students to ensure that all students who are members of these national minorities will have the opportunity to complete and further their education in a setting where their cultural needs will not be ignored. I am also of the opinion that Historically Black Colleges & Universities support these students in assessing them with what is necessary for a successful life and education as well as permitting them to experience this particular walk in life with people with similar physical and cultural characteristics. These schools strive in defining each persons own needs and support them in assessing what is necessary for a successful education while actively ensuring that their educational rights are realized. I advocate that in order for Historically Black College & Universities to continue their support in educating minorities we all have to make efforts to systemically adjust to the major change in the education system of this generation. We have to adjust to ensure that students that attend Historically Black College & Universities are offered full and equal access to the mainstream educational system. The authenticity of introducing this systemic change must exceed standard qualifications and must be easily recognized as an enhancement of our previous educational methodologies. These schools have to make mainstream America recognize that they play a very crucial role in preserving and strengthening the identity of its students belonging to particular ethnic groups. As an ethnically minority person, I genuinely feel that more effective strategies must be implemented to strengthen the educational process of developing qualified graduates. By so doing, this will project a more appositive posture that the pursuance of educational attainment is a vital concern in the lives of minority students. I also wish to advance the thought that Historically Black Colleges and Universities frequently referred to as the black experience, offer something other colleges and universities cannot give and that is, the ability to be surrounded by people who look like each other and having stored a great amount of history and legacies in “Her” blood. This gives her students a distinct and different perspective on life.Historically Black Colleges and Universities are a source of accomplishment and great pride for the African American Community as well as the entire nation. These Colleges and Universities have made it possible for students who were financially in need and rejected elsewhere further their education, and in spite of sometimes inequitable funding, continue to provide a unique education for minority students. Minority students who attend these schools graduate with greater frequency than minority students at other colleges and universities, and receive more academic and social support. Historically Black College & Universities must be preserved and protected because they are not only an important part of our past, but also an important part of our present and very sympathetic and beneficial to our future.
