There is a great amount of diversity in the United States of America. We are the country which is filled with multiple colors, cultures, and ethnicities. Even with the numerous differences within this country, some people are looked down upon. One would think that in a country which is so mixed, everyone would come to the understanding that even though we are different in many ways, we are so much more alike in thought and feelings about certain topics. Minority groups, usually, are the targets of discrimination and are seen subordinate to the more “American” groups whose voices are often heard over the smuggled voices of minorities groups attempting to gain some sense of equality and opportunity. Even with the multiple attempts which have occurred in the past by minority groups to fight for equality, there is still discrimination withing minority groups. These inter-minority biases and discrimination are a main component which is holding back a change from occurring. Minorities in the United States should work together to accomplish their goals and truly create equality in the “land of equality and freedom”. African Americans and Hispanics in the United States should work together as minorities to address political, cultural, communication, and community issues because of the fact that many of the issues at hand are similar to one another. If the African American and Hispanic groups united in working for their common goals and the greater good for both groups, they would form a stronger voice which may have enough power to cause a change in society. African Americans and Hispanics, or what could be considered minority groups, are actually the people who make up the majority of the population nowadays. With that fact comes that fact that there is a strength in numbers. Statistically, in politics, minorities do not vote because they feel that their opinion and votes won't make a difference. Community issues are similar across different minority neighborhoods, such as safe places for children to go to, the safety of the community, and the way to best provide for the members of the community who are in need. The issue of communication and culture go hand in hand because the way a person communicates is often tied with the culture they grew up with and that is not something which anyone should be forced to give up simply to fit into a community. Although it is important to known the main language of the country, the community members should not have to change who they are, but rather be encouraged to learn new things to add onto who they are and their abilities. There are many different strategies which could strengthen the relationship between the African American and Hispanic communities living within the United States. One main way is to create organizations, such as youth groups, or adult groups which focus on the similarities between the minorities in the United States. The purpose of these groups would be to show that there are many things in society which should be changed so that minority groups do not have to assimilate to the “American” way of life while leaving their culture and beliefs behind. Also to show the defects in how America sees equality and the way that true equality has not yet been reached. The groups would strengthen the unity within a community and make members aware of the power they have to make a difference. Of course these groups should also focus on making history known, such as the history of the Civil Rights Movement and the Chicano Movements because history is an important factor that should be considered when someone is attempting to improve things for the future. Historically Black Colleges & Universities should continue to support the needs of African American Students and possibly the needs of the growing Hispanic (and Afro-Hispanic) population in the United States because it is important to help the minorities in the United States, or the ones who have statistically are less likely to continue their education succeed in this country and break the stereotypes which often make them seem subordinate to other ethnicities. It is also important to continue the traditions that these colleges have had since their first day as an institution. Historically Black Colleges and Universities create stronger unity within the communities which attend them because of the similarities in backgrounds and cultures. Sociologically, people feel more comfortable being around people who are like them and who share a common interest or ethnicity. Minority groups should open their eyes and see the similarities within them. With an open mind and a leaving behind of stereotypes and biases, minority groups will be able to lovingly accept their counterparts and work together in forming a force that will be hard to put down. With knowledge and a sense of knowing where they came from, minorities should be able to peacefully unity and make the difference which they have individually been working on for generations.
