Masonic and Greeks Posted on 05-23-2007
sistagyrl

Just wanted to know how you feel about OES and Masons also being Greek? They are often listed amongst greek organizations and you can usually purchase their paraphernalia on sites selling Greek nalia. A friend of mine stated that these organizations are wannabe Greeks and was very offended by seeing some Eastern Stars stepping at a campus party. Being an Eastern Star as well as interest of a Greek organization, I'm wondering if this view is shared by anyone. This friend states that I have already taken an oath of another organizatin and therefore can't take the oath of another.

I am a Christian, and the word of God talks against taking oaths. If you read Deut. 6:13 and Matthew 5:33-37 it states that we shouldn't take oaths. That is the problem that I have with Greek organizations as well. They make people take oaths and have people to keep so many secrets. I thought about joining a Greek organization myself and that is what concerns me. I'm a Heroines of Jericho which is a degree higher than OES in Prince Hall. My sisters and myself are not really involved anymore in the organization due to those type of things. No offense or anything about your Greek organization, but the reason you have probably heard that it ties closely to idolatry is because of some people exalting it above God. I'm not saying that you do Sistagyrl, but some do. Also, the things that people do such as hazing does not line up with the word of God. Jesus told us to walk in love with people and you don't love them if you haze them and do all sort of mean things to people. So you have to be very careful when joining organizations that do not line up with the word of God.

I respect your point SMC112 but as a member of both type of organizations, I just don't see the link of association with ungodly things. As far as individuals putting their organization above God, I feel that these people probably don't know God and would praise anything that can make them happy. Every one I have met that is a member of Beta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has been a member of a church. (As a Neo, I admit that I have not met everyone). In fact in both AKA and OES we do a 'Church visit' just to show our support to our churches and causes in the community. There are probably those who do 'worship' their fraternity or sorority, but they are among the few. It is not a practice that I know of to ostracize God or put your affiliation above your love for him. My mother belongs to just about every Masonic house, including Heroines of Jericho, and also is very active in her church of thirty years. I know that she would not take part in any practice that would go against God and his teachings.

Well, that's good Sistagyrl that you have your priorities straight. There are many in the Greek organizations that do not have the mentality that you have. Another thing you mentioned about everyone of your sorors of Beta Eta Omega chapter belong to a church. Honey, don't be deceived. Not everyone that belongs to a church is a Christian. So many people go to church for the wrong motives. Some of your sorors might be there to find a man or network. Who knows? LOL Go and read the stuff on the thread about finding a man at church. I posted some stuff on there about my ex-boyfriend. Yeah, he was at church but girl he put me through some stuff worse than any worldly man would have! LOL Anyway, sistagyrl you have encouraged me to still possibly pursue my interest in pledging, but I will keep my eyes open to what these individuals believe or what they are doing! I will not put that organization before God nor will I be mean or rude to people. Alright, take care sistagyrl!

Because it is in organization that supports charity, leadership, wellbeing and other ideals that are needed not only in the black community, but our nation as a whole.

there are plenty orgs that are not rooted in the ancient mysteries that serve our community for Born again believers . If you are not a born again you are free to do whatever without breaking the law. But believers walk in the Light of the Word of God.

The key word you said in your post was 'myth.' A myth can be true, fiction, or loosely based on the truth. A myth is also subject for interpretation. In this instance my knowledge of the story of ****, the goddess of fertility and motherhood, is a bit different from yours as well as the interpretation. My organization believes that **** has many of the characteristics that all strong women have and need such as compassion, intuition, determination, nurturing, and resourcefulness. Our ogranization is based on these traits and we strive to demonstrate those charactreistics through our services to our local and national communities. We don't see **** as above the Almighty God. We do see those traits as something that is God-given. Again, the organization is based on a idea, or interpretation from a myth. There is no one alive at the time that this story was recorded to know the message that the writer was trying to deliver. It like many stories are subject to the readers interpretation. Instead of basing your view on a source that is itself questionable in its credibility (Wikipedia), research the organization, as well as other accounts of ****, before so quickly condemning its members to hell.
