NATISHA ROBERSON By being minorities first, we are often looked upon as not capable or powerless. Sometimes we are seen as if we can not make any smart decisions. We, as African Americans and Hispanics, need to work together to address any political, cultural, and communication issues. There are things that can be done to strengthen the relationship between minorities, and the only people that will strengthen it are us. I believe that all Historically Black College and Universities should continue to support the needs of minorities in more ways than one. Just with the financial support, we become more capable and powerful then we already are. When you are defined as a minority, some people believe that you are weak because you are small in number. You get looked over when it’s time to vote, or ignored when you demand a change. When we come together we can come up with brighter ideas to change our community. No one truly knows how you want to see your community, except you and the others who live in it. Who would be a better advocate for our community than us? Once we start to believe we can change things, so will others, including the ones who once looked over us. By working together instead of against one another we will be stronger, maybe not in number but in power. This is one step to becoming closer as minorities. I believe most minorities have very similar wants and needs. By strengthening our relationships with one another and taking a chance, big things can happen. If a small group of Hispanics, and a small group of African Americans come together to make one group representing minorities, we can start to discuss ideas. We could have different programs or activities that bring minority children together; our future is in the hands of the children. This can help to build our trust for one another, and realize that we need to stick together and stand strong. We as minorities need to trust in each other more instead of running away from problems. When we see our neighborhood being degraded our first thought is to move instead of trying to change things. When you constantly walk away from problems, instead of at heading them face on, when do you really expect things to change? Instead of moving away, we could organize a big clean up day involving kids and adults alike. Many HBCUs can help with this course of action as well. I believe all minorities should appreciate the support from any HBCU. Historically black colleges should continue to support minorities, simply because minorities should strengthen their relationship by helping one another. What could be more helpful and strengthening then minorities who have made it, supporting and caring for those trying to make it; students. There are other ways that Historically Black College and Universities can support not just the need of minorities now, but also the growing Hispanic and African American population throughout the United States. I believe historically black colleges should not only give away scholarships, but set up programs to guide all high school students toward scholarships. Our world is always changing, and sometimes it is not always for the better. Coming together as one and aiming for nothing but the best life can offer, will bring about nothing but great opportunities for everyone. By simply taking a second look at some of these suggestions can help us move a little closer to SUCCESS!
