African American & Hispanic Unity Essay Posted on 06-01-2007

The public education system, society really, inundates those in them with “white is the best” ideology. Oh, the education system and America do not blatantly proclaim this; to the common people they seem to proclaim, “America is the best,” and “We are a country with a proud history.” However, when there are only white faces shown to have contributed to the country’s greatness the system says, “America is white.” The mental conditioning to accept “white is the best” ideology is so ingrained in our society the ideology is now a part of most everyone’s subconscious and because of this conditioning our culture accepts the status quo. The status quo being the cycle of difficult social, economic, and living environments that ensnares the non-white races of America. History portrays Native Americans and Hispanics as backward people who could not stand in the way of white America’s greatness; the fact that the government lied, cheated, and **** them off is not tragic but rather comes across the history books as necessary. American history shows Asians as opportunists coming across the ocean to escape oppression, leech America’s greatness, and excel in the capitalistic society created and fueled by the whites. History says that all races other than white in this country are lucky to be here, as if whites alone have earned the right to call America theirs, non-whites are here through the grace of white benefactors. This is an outrage, but instead of protesting, Americans accept this as facts instead of lies. People born after 1968, have been sheltered from the true extent of racism in this country by the arms of the Civil Rights Movement. These generations take for granted an “integrated” society, thinking that laws fighting overt racism guarantees true equality in the masses. Political decisions controlled by the voting public effect everyone in our society. Unfortunately, the voting public is mainly comprised of white, middle class Americans. Often, policy makers disregard the non-white races when making decisions that affect all the people in the society while catering to the voting public. Society tries to reach voters with cultural campaigns, community improvement initiatives, and societal objectives because voters have the power to implement change. Numbers are what creates voting power. The voting public is the people who voice their opinions at the polls and in open forums in the community. People have to care and believe in the power of their voice, or they will not vote or make their opinions known at the polls or in open forums. In order to care and believe, people have to see themselves in the changes and positions. If Black and Hispanic Americans were to unite on political, cultural, communication and community issues, they would have more numbers, and subsequently, a louder, more effective voice in America to bring about change. Ever since humanity classified itself with races, one race has been trying to prove superiority over the others at the expense of the others. Although this is human, it is not helpful. Humanity seems to be more concerned with race and ethnic grouping than crime, poverty, ignorance, and depravity combined. Education and interaction are the keys to improving race relations in our society. Nothing short of a complete reprogramming in the way Blacks and Hispanics view themselves will be successful at improving race relations. Race labeling, ethnic claiming protocols in our society are common; but this creates exclusivity. Each generation should create a better future for their offspring. Find and exploit the commonalities that bind Blacks and Hispanics together and there will be a powerful community. Does ethnicity really matter when the non-white races are equally disadvantaged? Americans ought to be ashamed; the multi-cultural masses languish in ignorance struggling to survive and dreaming of money instead of a greater tomorrow. Why? Why are we more concerned with living the American Dream than creating a new one? Why are we not dreaming about true equality, an end to racism, healthy lives, the end of poverty, or the end of ****? Instead, we dream of being millionaires. How pitifully skewed these values are. People with college educations are more likely to vote and be positive contributors to society. Historically Black Colleges and Universities are highly appealing to and encourage blacks to attend for many reasons including, historical significance, family legacy, and a unique learning environment. Not many accredited colleges offer curriculum and degrees with consideration and focus on multicultural relationships or viewpoints. Historically Black Colleges and Universities do, and they need to send their programs to the commoner’s level. Opening more community colleges and starting education programs in the other accredited colleges would educate more people on multicultural issues. Many minorities have no idea that they are not living in an equal and level playing field in American society. Educated Blacks are trying to reach the uneducated blacks and that is good. However, Blacks are not the only race that is disadvantaged in America. People who dream of a better future should not allow race to keep them apart from their common goal, advancement. In order to achieve advancement, minority races need to unite. If there can be no other common ground, let the races unite under the legacies of systemic oppression and racism and work toward their elimination.
