In this country, it is known for African-American and Hispanic relations to be extremely poor. As the two highest minorities in the US, the two races often discover themselves discriminating amongst each other, fighting to be the greatest or most popular. Meanwhile, while these two races meddle in pools of ignorance conflicting with each other, the majority caucasian race steadily ascends. As we occupy each other in trivial matters, we could be focusing on important issues, such as working together to improve major concerns in our lives and our communities.
African-Americans and Hispanics in the US should work together to address common issues because, as minorities, we represent an insignificant percentage of our country already. However, if we combine our figures to produce change within our communities, the likelihood of a positive outcome could become that much more prevalent. We as two disregarded minorities just have to keep in remembrance that we both are discriminated upon by the masses throughout this nation, and by mutual prejudice and not working together to address issues, we are simply counteracting the purpose of achieving our main goal- to enhance the future lives of our people.
To strengthen the relationship between the African-American and Hispanic populations, several innovative methods can be generated. To begin, the ideal key that would unlock the doors of change, would have to start out with dialogue and communication. This communication would also have to start within the homes of these particular minorities. As it is known, most of the substance that builds the framework for an individual's thoughts, values, beliefs, and ideas, originate from those who cultivate their growth- their parents. Just think, if you are a Christian, did you grow up in a Muslim household? The answer more than likely would be no. Or for those whites who grew up in the era of slavery and Civil Rights, who taught them to be prejudice? The answer is their parents, for the fact that under no circumstance is there any just reason to discriminate upon another individual because of the mere difference in their skin color. Therefore, a change would have to begin in the homes of African-Americans and Hispanics, regarding the dialogue and communication of how they depict the opposing race.
Open forums can also be applied to highlight the poor relations between African-Americans and Hispanics, and the need to make a change. These forums can provide aid by equipping individuals with the knowledge to learn how to appreciate each other's culture and diversity, and to further manipulate it to enhance our world.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities should continue to support the needs of our minority populations, by establishing more outreach organizations to foster and encourage the development of our younger generations. We have to begin with this younger audience because, realistically, they are our future teachers, politicians, doctors, and engineers. Statisically, only 10% of African-Americans will achieve success. Taking this fact into consideration, the urgency of change is made conscious. Therefore, it is vital that these HBCUs support the needs of both minorities because, together we can move mountains, but alone we may only be able to move stones.
