Since the late twentieth and early twenty first century the two leading minorities in the United States have been African Americans and Hispanic Americans. These two major minority groups have been a source of constant source of change, innovation and pride. Despite the great leaps forward these two minorities have made they have also been plagued by infighting among the two groups which have caused many in the groups to lose focus on the greater common interests that these two groups share. African Americans and Hispanic Americans in the United States should work together as minorities, because we both share a number of common issues that with the power of both of our communities we can solve. Both African Americans and Hispanics along with many other minorities in this country have been historically underrepresented and unheard on many issues that matter to their specific groups and to this country as a whole. African Americans and Hispanics should also work together more often, because by working together more issues such as school funding, community programs, social programs, and political issues can be solved easier. We as the two largest minorities should also work together, because we as minorities are both reaching for the same thing in every political and social battle that we fight equality. In reaching for equality we as minorities should learn how to work together and put aside whatever problems or inhibitions that we may have for one another in order to make it easier for the our children to live and work in this country. African Americans and Hispanics should work together finally, because all of the arguing, bickering, and talking bad about each other and blocking each other politically only servers to hurt each of our two races and to help divert us from the major goal that we both reach for equality. Some things that can be done to strengthen the relationship between African American and Hispanic communities are to encourage tolerance, promote cultural education, and to create a better cultural understanding of each race. We as a country and even a community can achieve these goals by culturally educating our children in school through cultural education and sensitivity classes. I believe that if we educate our children on other cultures and their issues it will be easier for them to interact and communicate with each other. I also believe that educating our children in this way will prevent many arguments and fights that may occur because of peoples cultural misconceptions about different cultures. We could also teach our children at home while they are young about different cultures and peoples. Studies show that children learn and obtain most of their habits and behaviors from parents and teachers. So I believe that if parents make a good effort to teach and show their children about different people, their cultures, foods and customs. In doing this I believe that the perception our children have towards one another can and will change and for the better. Historically black colleges and universities can continue to support the needs of African American and Hispanic Americans by first of all staying open to support the students who need a quality education and college experience. HBC’s can also support the needs of African American and Hispanic Americans by offering more scholarships and expanding their recruiting tactics. One of the things that really hurt many HBCU’s across the country is the fact that they do not recruit as aggressively as other schools do. I believe that if they start being more aggressive in their recruiting techniques that their numbers would increase along with their reputation for excellence. Also by expanding their recruiting tactics HBCU’s can expand their reputation from being only black schools to a reputation of being diverse schools with predominantly African American backgrounds. Historically black colleges and universities should continue to support the needs of African Americans and Hispanic Americans, because they provide a unique educational experience that cannot be mirrored by any other university. HBCU’s should also continue to do this, because many HBCU’s are the leading educators in their particular field. Some examples of this are Prairie View A&M University being a leader in the nursing field, Tuskegee University being a leader in veterinary medicine and Texas Southern University being a leader in the Pharmaceutical field. This fact in my opinion shows the need for HBCU’s to stay open, because being a leader in a certain field shows that HBCU’s consistently put out only the best into the world in many fields. In conclusion HBCU’s provide excellent and unique educational experience that cannot be copied by any other educational institution. HBCU’s are the leaders in various fields of study and continue to produce only the very best graduates. Because of the existence of such institutions many young minority students both Hispanic and African American have the ability to learn from the best in every field of study. HBCU’s also help to shape the young immature students who enter into their gates into Mature, educated, and capable young professionals who are ready to participate in Americas work force. Finally HBCU’s also provide a unique culture that cannot be copied at any other school whether it be the schools Greeks “stomping the yard”, Homecoming events, or providing a family oriented atmosphere where the students can both learn and be entertained by campus activities at the same time.
