HSOs (High School Organizations) Posted on 01-05-2008

Soooo... out of curiousity... Were any of you, or are any of you, members of High School Organizations (HSOs)? Here in Memphis, they are kind if popular with the High School students... we have tons of them.. and they step, host parties, do their strolls and calls and all that jazz. They do they whole "pledging" process (lines) and initiaite members, community service projects, etc. etc. The less knowledgable people refer to them as "high school sororities/fraternities", though we always have to correct them because we are NOT and do not claim to be sororities/fraternities... although some of the male organizations are affiliated with some fraternities (Kappa League, NSI/Omega Prep). So I was just wondering if they were popular elsewhere or if any of you are/had been members of anything similar?

beautiful what is the name of the organization? I believe you are a lil sister of the AKA's. In the midwest we did not have male greek organization such as BETA Sigma Club (Lil brothers of the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.) but I know my friend was a lil sis to the Deltas. These type organizations are not common up North or in the Midwest. I am not sure why but they are hot down here in da South.
I do believe the reason why it's not so common in the North is because it really didn't originate here. Like, we have chapters of sororities/fraternities, but few people join them up here. There's more of a focus of WHAT school you went to up here, rather than what organization you were part of.

Hi TN family...Good Luck with the step show!
Hey, and Thanks!!! Yep I've heard of Sigma Beta Club. However, my aunt is a Delta and when I asked her about any high school programs she only told me about something that did not sound like the HSOs. I've heard of that AKA program, but no one in my area participates in it that I know of. The Debutante programs by Links Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi are also reallyyy popular! I've always dreamed of being a Deb... And yes, most of the girls who I know went to college and have expressed a strong interest in joining a sorority. Our sponsor is actually a member of AKA herself. I think the experience of our HSOs tries to imitate the experience you get whilst becoming/being a member of a sorority. We try to include many of the same fundamentals that are incorporated into sororities (community service, sisterhood, mentoring, high standards relating to behavior and etc.)

There are different teen groups sponsored by the different sororities in Ohio. They are more like after school enrichment programs. All of the D9 give away scholarships. Also certain groups sponsor Debutante programs. After attending college in the South, I have witnessed some teen groups that are like mini sororities and fratenities. The high school students have signs, calls, line jackets, etc. We actually had a step show on campus that showcased the talents of different high school groups in the area. I know that back home that we don't have groups like this. I don't know why though.

Its call the AKAette Scholarship Program . In a sense we are like little sisters because there is a lot of mentoring involved. Where I stay there is a program sponsored by the Deltas but its more like a debutante thing where as the program i'm in in year long.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated has a high school affiliate called the Rhoer Club. Any graduate chapter of Sigma may host a Rhoer Club.

"Project Pat" Kappa Leadership League Fall 04 Line Name: "Fabulous !5" Flint Michigan has alot of those groups here, I was a member of the K-league, and we have the Delta Gems, the Alpha Akettes, the Gamma Delta Xinpos/kudos who are sponsored by the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa. and we have more groups who step that aernt founded by greek frats/sorors. We have two step shows a year, one in June and one in december. Both are very productive and do very well. alot of groups like the K-League dont do much to uphold the standards of the group, I mean our mentor emphasized education and dressing for success and he taugth us and his still teaching young men what they need to know to succeed.

im from rochester ny and we have teams that are like families and do community service and such. But my team does not initiate or pledge ppl we just have try outs like do a step, have judging requirements, and if u meet them and have the right gpa u are on . We dont consider ourselves an organization....its pretty much saying u r a sorority or frat in different words....if u r gonna pledge ppl and all that jazz just like a bglo black greek letter ORGANIZATIONS similar pretty much the same... to me i think its kinda mocking greek life but its different if its a like jr. division of a particular organization. I was in an AKA cotillion but i dont kno if thats considered an HSO

I think this is a down south thing and recent too, as a military brat I never saw this on the west coast, up north, or midwest, but my sister was telling me about this in Birmingham.
