I'm sure part of this had to do with his parents not wanting their 14 year old son living that far from home. If I was in his shoes I would have picked an hbcu too, but i would have picked a higher ranked one. this is really good though. it shows that many really intelligent people pick hbcu's over ivys because they are good schools with good environments for black students.

WOW SOUTHERN IS GOOD IN CERTAIN AREA'S THEY IS NO MORE HIGHER RANKED HBCU THEY ARE ON THE SAME LEVEL SORRY TO TELL YOU
Actually sorry to tell you but southern isn't one of the top ranked hbcu's. i may be young but i know how to read rankings.
here is a link to the top ranked hbcu's: USNews.com: America's Best Colleges 2008: Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Top Schools
my point wasn't that southern was in any way a bad school my point was that alot of that probably had to do with him being only 14. i would never let a 14 year old move across the country rather it be for harvard or howard i don't care. they live near southern so the parents probably wanted him near. i do however agree with his statement about hbcu's being the better experience. I just don't believe that was the sole reason.

I'm not putting Southern down. You can't make it seem like all hbcu's are equal. I don't care who wrote it. They use a very specific formula to rank schools. They don't just say gee lets put Spelman, Morehouse, Howard, Hampton, and Fisk at the top because its fun. There are schools that are better than others. lol. I suppose you think all pwi's are equal as well. They may have some good programs, but my point was that it isn't one of the top hbcu's and i proved that by providing information so i'm moving on now. You can accept the truth or try to believe it is just the white mans way of making us hate ourselves.
The BLACK Ceo of the United Negro College fund seems to agree with the rankings: "The fact that U.S. News and World Report has issued these rankings of black colleges is itself a testament to what HBCUs are accomplishing, said Michael Lomax, president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund. “Students and parents who are researching quality information about colleges and universities will truly benefit from this landmark ranking,” he said." I'm not putting Southern down my point in case you didn't notice was that him going there probably had more to do with his parents wanting him to remain at home. Would you let a 14 year old move across the country. Rather it be for a top pwi or top hbcu. I wouldn't. There option would be the university down the street, or they'd be waiting to go to college until they are at least 16.

ok if u believe a ranked school makes you look better then good luck on that
I don't think it makes you look better, but I know it means that you're at a better school. That is the point of the rankings. They allow you to know which schools are better. By better I mean which schools have better endowments therefore they are more financially stable, they tell you which schools are the most selective making it more academically challenging, they show which schools have the highest 4 year graduation rate which is important if you plan on graduating in 4 years, it shows the student to teacher ration which is important if you value personal time with teachers, it shows the retention rate of students, and the alumni gving rate. So if you don't believe any of that is important good luck to you in life because yes this is the type of stuff I look at to determine which schools are better. Considering that I already went through this once with picking a prep school, and looking at the rankings helped alot, and it was very wise of me to pick the number one ranked prep school, i think I'll be fine with picking a college.

excuse me then the rankings must be wrong because southern alumni give back a whole lot so goin by that is real stupid reason to rank a school. o yeah you are putting down southern by sayin that other schools are better. all schools are on the same level as each other because they are universities and also accredited so we can not say which one is better until attend both of those schools. I have an uncle who went to Harvard and Morehouse he said morehouse was much harder on him then Harvard but harvard is ranked higher then morehouse hmmm.
