Question for the NON greeks! Posted on 07-14-2008

I have seen numerous threads from people asking about the popluarity of Greek Orgs on different campus. I'm curious to know why NON greeks want to be apart of a BGLO. Because it seems are if popularity plays a key part. Hey you could even tell me why "ur friend" wants to join..lol

Ha! But on a serious tip... If I intend on joining, it will be simply for oppurtunity that I will have to make a positive impact on the African-American community. I'm quite sure I could do that outside of a BGLO, but few orgs have the recognition and/or notoriety that BGLO's have. I'm not in it for the popularity, the social spectrum isn't all that important to me. Oh, and also to shutdown all the friggin' highschoolers that SWEAR on they **** relative's graves that they gon' join' so-and-so's sorority/fraternity when they get to college... Could you like, get to college, FIRST? I know you ain't failing like six classes and expecting AKA to be ringing down your damn doorbell...

I guess when I was in college I wanted to join because I have some family members that are a part of some of the Greek orgs. I had my mind set on one particular org because I have aunts and cousins that are a part of xyz. Come to find out, when I actually got to college I didn't like those girls on the particular campus. So it pays to just sit back and not make a decision until you see how the organization of females act on your campus. Now that I'm out of school that desire to join a Greek org is gone! I have other extracurricular activities that I'm a part of that wouldn't leave any extra time for a Greek org. For one thing, I belong to a church with a large membership that has so many activities that wouldn't leave time for Greek stuff. Also, I'm not willing to pay out $800-1000 dollars to join a Greek org. I can do community service and have fellowship with other women for free! LOL Anyway, to each its own. Anyway, getting back to your question the reason I wanted to join a Greek org was because of family members. If it wasn't for family members I probably wouldn't have ever had the desire to join one.

As for me, the one thing I have noticed is the shakers and movers in my hometown (and where my family live in other cities) they tend to be part of a BGLO. My mentors and role models in high school were all members of their respective organizations, and while my mama didn't join in college, I wanted to walk down my own path. It's something I intend on doing one day, probably after I finish undergrad (life is WAYYYY too hectic right now!) but I like what they stand for!

I guess with me, I tend to change my mind about the Greek orgs daily. Some days I want to join and then some days it's like whatever! I guess if someone asked me I wouldn't turn it down but as far as me running after a Grad chapter, to freely give out a bunch of money, that's not going to happen! LOL Yet, I wouldn't turn down a offer if someone asked me to join.

Me personally, I find it fulfilling to be apart of a greek organization. My brother and his wife are greek, and I have some other family members who are likewise, but there is a specific org that has this legacy that I feel that i want to be apart of.

What draws you to the org? A lot of people have parents in certain, but that diesn't mean that particular organization is for you. I know someone who has Zeta's and Sigma's down their family line all way to great grandparents but they decided to do something else. Some people just join certain orgs just to please their parents. My best friend's moother wanted her to be a Delta so bad, but it wasn't in her heart so she went a different route. I'm saying this to say RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH before committing anything. This is a life time committment and you don't want to have regrets.

Life time commitment? Most people stop their commitment after graduation. The ones that work with the org are the ones that never joined undergrad.

A great many of our State Directors as well as our Grand is a product of undergrad. And this is just to name a few in high positions. I can't speak for other Orgs, but I can and will speak for Zeta.
