So, I love giving my time to volunteer work and working on new cmapaigns and ideas for different causes. A guy came up to me once and told me that he was an Omega and that I should think about pledging Delta. another came up right behind him and told me AKA. I'm the first in my family to finish high school, so what I know is limited. I blieve in sisterhood and everything, but I don't want to join just to have a social circle. Do sororities and fraternities, even those other than Deltas, Omegas, Kappas, and AKAs, because I realize that other DO exist, still serve their communities with vigor and a noticible presence? Or is it just one big party? Does it vary from campus to campus? Another question, I'm going to Howard U. Why does everyone want to pledge Alpha chapter? Tradition?
To answer your questions....
Still serve their communities? Yes we do. Depending upon how large or small your community is will determine if it's a "noticeable" presence. 5 Deltas doing service may not provide a "noticeable" presence in the NYC community.
One big party? At times it can be. All work and no play is dull!
Vary from campus to campus? Definitely. Chapter atmosphere may differ but the goals/aims of the organization remain the same.
Why does everyone want to pledge Alpha Chapter? We don't. If you choose to attend Howard as an undergraduate and decide to join AKA, DST, OPP, PBS or ZPB, you have no choice but to join that respective Alpha Chapter.

I didn't think there were DSTs or AKAs in NYC period, much less having a 'noticeble' presence.
But what I'm hearing alot from highschool girls that want to pledge down South for sororities is that they want to join the Alpha Chapters because they figure there's a higher status with the very first chapters. They figure that they'll get better networking and higher paying jobs and such.

I was just using DST as an example. I don't know of their numbers personally in NYC.
Ehhh, I wouldn't bank on that notion.
The letters on your chest matter the most...not the sleeve!
To me, a brother is a brother is a brother is a brother. Chapter doesn't matter.
