how important are SAT or ACT test scores Posted on 06-24-2005

When applying to an HBCU or any college, really, just how important are standardized test scores? Can a college really base how successful you may or may not be at their school by a score from one Saturday of testing? What if your GPA is exceptionally high, yet your test scores are so low? What if you are involved in plenty of extra curriculars? Just how important is the SAT or ACT? ~Brittany

when applying to HBCUs...i've come to realize that you can have a lower SAT score and get into an HBCU sorta easily...u dont even need to break 1000...i havent really looked into the requirements of the majority of PWIs..but, since HBCUs are supposed to produce the BEST of black people..I would hope they'd want students with higher test grades..but that's juss a personal opinion that spills into other topics..neway.. generally speaking..if u have a high GPA...that gives u some slack for ur SATs or ACTs...and vice versa...however, if you have a high GPA and high SATs or ACTs...u are more prone to be considered for scholarships..so i guess aim high... and also, i dont think it's how succesful u'll be at the school..but juss how knowledgable at this stage in ur education you are...for example, a high GPA, but a low testin score MIGHT mean you're a hard worker, but not a good test taker....while a high test score and a low GPA might mean u're really bright but not the most dedicated student..no1 eva really knows how a student will turn out during and after college because that's up to u and how u handle your business while ur there...they juss look for the best candidates who they think are capable of making it in their certain college environment..

Partially the SAT and ACT are supposed to test your academic ability to succeed in college. I don't think that is necessarily true, b/c some people just don't do well on standardized test. For some colleges and universities the score on these test can make you or break you, for others its not so crucial. The only thing I can think to suggest it to make sure your grades are tight, you are involved in your school and your community, and just a well rounded person. Anyone can make straight A's if they really try and do nothing, but the B and C students who do something with themselves are usually the ones who stick out. Hope this helps.

Depends on where you go, and how selective the school is. Most colleges divide the weight between test scores and the application essay, with additional input from GPA, activities, recommendations, and interviews if the college offers or requires one. Publications like Princeton Review and Kaplan's can provide you with the median SAT scores of students accepted to the schools you're interested in. If you have a good track record of achievement in school and extracurriculars, those things can overcome moderate or low test scores. Many people aren't natural test-takers or had an off day, but turn out to be great students, and admissions counselors realize that. Holla!
