I'm not a N*gga!! Posted on 05-05-2004
HU_Intellect

Due to recent post and extreme use of the word I thought that I would make this post. I wrote a novel called "I'm not a n*gga", that explained the history of the word and how it has evolved and the power that it has had on our people. Well the overall purpose of that novel (really short story) was to tell why we shouldn't refer to each other as n*ggas and how it is hypocritical to get mad at another race for using it when you use it everyday. Everybody who knows me knows that I can't stand the word (just ask Wizdom and FAMU_first) I try to protest when ever I hear somebody using it but I find that I am often alone in my thinking and to many people it has just become another word, and it is often too energy consuming. I think there was a post like this before but, HOW DO Y'ALL FEEL ABOUT THE WORD N*GGA!

well mr. HU_intellect, yet you've posted up another good topic on here. we've had some great discussion on this famous word "ni**a/ni**er. but truthfully, i don't ever use this word. even when i feel like its comin to the tip of my mouth, i'll stop myself, b/c ill suddenly realize and ask myself..would my ancestors want me sayin this word? nowadays, it seems like the only reason most black peeps say it is b/c others do. its all in the songs we listen to everyday. it has become part of the norm, and it seems like if u dont use the word you're not sharing that "bond" with our fellow black people. but no, i refuse to use a word that was used to oppress us...for what?? you can just as easily share a bond with your black associates w/out using the word. so y cant we stop usin it yall?
we...don't...want...too  i don't find it important enough 2 refrain my diction...the word just doesn't offend me and as far as offendin' my ancestors i'm positive that on the list of offending things i do in their respects ni99a is not at the top

i don't think its a hypocritical(sp) move to not let whites use ni99a itz a matter or respect just like i don't call them crackers or spanish ppl **** or chinese ----- these r words i understand they get because of their oppresion (esp. the last 2...**** really has no signif. itz kinda wack 2 me)
But that is silly if it is just a word and nothing else why shouldn't anybody be able to say it. This is the hypocrisy of our people we want others to respect us withous respecting ourselves.
I agree i guess....but i'm also agitated by white people sayin bruva...homie...etc. etc. but truth b told if itz not a racist sentiment i really don't care....i just protest them using it because the only other option would b 2 condone it.....*sighs* life often is extreme in one way or another although i guess there is a growin' group that allows white people 2 say ni99A anyway so ehh only a matter of time
Sounds like the slipery slope/ "We already oppressed why try to fight it" falacy. This is the type of thinking we don't need. Don't except it just because others are, if our ancestors would have done that we would still be slaves right now, if our great grand parents would have done that we would still be drinking out of segregated water fountains, if the few strong minded black people do that now, unfortunatly our condition will not get any better and we will continue to have 100 black males going to jail for every one graduating from college, we will continue to have our youth strive for success on the court and field instead of success in the classroom. You see my brotha it is up to us to promote change and the only way we are gonna be able to do that is to think on our own. Sorry bout that didn't mean to preach
that whole linkage is ridiculous i refuse 2 believe a pronoun could cause the digression of our ppl... "ni99az" goin 2 jail is not because of how they talk maybe weak family structures maybe racial profiling perhaps economic situations definitely by committing a crime i started out ready 2 argue but realized i don't care so i just filled up wit nothin' for the post sorry :o :? 8) :x

i can understand why the term"****" can be so offense to some people. i recently completed a long study of the civil rights movement and i talked to people about the word. since "****" was re-created from the racial slur "****" people find it wrong to say. to make this short i think that this word is just that, a word. i feel that you as a person give a fire its flame. the word has grown and i think it has separated itself from its orgin, i think its a way for us to use it in humor as "oh well this means nothing to me" its just a little word thats not important even to be protesting and worrying about. i do think we should leave it alone though just because of where it came from. we as fellow african-americans can sit around and use the word with no worries but if a white person was to utter it to us in the same way.... all hell breaks loose. but like i said it is what you make it and since i make it no big deal, then it isnt one to me. nice question though.

Ok...I'm guilty...I say it all the time. But after reading alot of the responses from y'all, I've decided to curb this bad habit. My justification for it was always that it doesn't mean the same thing anymore. it's sort of used as a word of affection when using it with your friends. But I know everyone has witnessed a fight or argument between 2 Blacks and the most used word (besides all the cussing) is the word N*gga. Is it so affectionate then? Not at all. And for the question of other races sayin it...that's a no no! My school is predominatley Asian and most of them are Philipinas and they all swear they Black. It's usually pretty funny but one day I was talkin to one of my real good friends and she slipped up and said it!! I almost flipped out for a minute but she was all apologies. This made me realize how negative this word really is. The way it affects people speaks for itself. I get even more offended though when they White girls wanna play the Black thing with the "Wassup dawg" and "Homie G" and the "wassup Shaniqua". Oh hell no. Every Black person isn't like that and all of our names sure ain't Shaniqua. My name is DANIELLE. I don't go around pretending my name is Becky **** because that's plain old disrespectful. You know what. I gotta go because I'm gettin a little mad just typin. Whoever was talkin about the 7 strp plan to stop sayin the word n*igga, I'm with you. **Sorry for the lengthiness, just had to blow off some steam**

And I know what you mean about the white folks. where I work at, they always come around saying "what's up dawg" or "what's up playa" and they blaccent be all of too. lol Most of the time i don't trip, but it does kinda make me think for a minute. here's a twist on things... we all know how african americans feel when white people call them n*ggers, but... how do African Americans feel when Africans call them n*ggers?

When my people (BLACKS) call me a ni@#$$ I get highly offended. To me its like you don't think I am intelligent, and it is insulting. When I see my people use the word I get angry, and try to explain to them that when they say that word, it makes them look ignorant, and that is exactly what the definition of a Ni&%#$ is. I know it is hard for ppl to stop using the word because they have grown up hearing it daily and it has not stopped but this is only an excuse to use it. So what I am saying is, "It was easy for the word to be started so it should be easy for the word to be stopped" Bottom line, stop using the word ****!
