How Much Does It Cost?: Becoming Greek Posted on 11-08-2005
College Mom

:-D I JUST got an inside confirmation or two that my son is an "invited" Alpha!!!!! (he is going to go for it) He got two "invites" which was nice. I actually helped him a little so, what I want to know how much should I budget for these expenses? My son has no idea (obviously)...so your help would be great. If I got the terminology mixed up forgive me...I am just SOOOO happy for him!

I paid my way myself. My mom didn't even know i was pledging until i was about 1/2-3/4ths of the way through. I'm not hating on the fact that your son has a financially stable background but i do believe certain things he should work for, or at least pay the majority of. He'll appreciate it more in the end plus it'll teach him to stand on his own two feet and be a man. You shouldn't give him any extra.... if he really wanted this he would have been smart enough to save up what u have been giving him, budgeting for the future so that he could do this. If worse comes to worse if his LBs are really his LBs then they got his back... and yeah it ain't cheap but it really depends on the chapter.
Man, I do agree with you that a man really shuld work for it if he really wants it. Also that he would appreciate it more when he does work for it. My mom and dad taught me early in life to work for stuff that I really want. They really did help me manage my money and how to save it. Also, whatever I bought I knew I earned it.

If your son has been accepted for a new intake class, he should have been directed to have the money available within a few days. I suggest you not post Beta chapter business on an open forum like this. I MIGHT BE A REGIONAL OFFICER. . . and things are looking mighty shady from my viewpoint. As far as, expenses, continue your allowance, that is way more than enough for pledging/intake by the old AND new processes. If he knew he wanted to participate, he should have either had this conversation with you all at the beginning of his sophomore year OR been saving up the money. It's preferable for him to pay for it out of his own pocket. Students tend to appreciate the opportunity better. AND WE DO NOT HAVE A LEGACY CLAUSE, so your sons acceptance is still at best provisional. Now, please for the love of God and all that is good about black greekdom, NEVER post things of this nature again. As a matter of fact, let me call my frat in DC, right now. . . you say you're from California right? Oh this will be really easy. . . .

Why would we? It should be listed in his packet from the national organization and the letter from his area director, and chapter. He needs to communicate that to his mother. Now that I think about it, the old form was decommissioned. College Mom, your boy has already started the process. As a matter of fact, he should be finished very soon; ie he should have already paid for the membership audition. But if not, Beta would be the chapter that thinks they are good enough to have a line in 06. . .

I don't kno exactly how much it is, but at Morehouse the fees are in the thousands. I heard that From a credible source that one fraternity had fees that added up to over 2 G's. That's just what was told to me, I don't kno how much it really is.

Serious question for you CollegeMom: You're the wife of an ALPHA and the daughter of a KAPPA and you're on a message board inquiring about intake fees. Why not talk to the men around you rather than asking random strangers? :???:

:veuze: WOW!!! Sorry, sorry and sorry some more! Seems like a WHOLE lotta folks lurk the internet...take action(phone has not stopped ringing)...and what I did was not intentional but not the best move to make. I thought "celebrating" and "researching" in cyber-space would be better than talkin' to the competetive, cut-throat mom's that I know...BAD MOVE. I only hope that my son "recovers" from my mistake. Alpha's are nice and forgiving to mom's...ONCE. I am no way rich or trying to floss, front, etc. The stuff I do is so every-day(boring) on my block. Matter of fact, I am the poor-ist of the bunch and that do not bother me. If I got under your skin, I duly apolgize. This is not why I am here. I just want to make sure I am in touch, through constructive feedback, with what is within the "range" of reason..reasonable for a black college kid. WILE: I know the deal with legacy....thanks to my husband who is furious with me(again). I appreciate your call outs. Be upset with me for my ignorance...PM me like "everyone" else has...in "love" but, exempt my California son from your reach. Thanks!

Ascesion: I did. I just wanted to get some comparisons. I did not chat with my husband initially because he thinks I am WAY TOO INVOLVED with Boo(son). He also is clear that son's Greek Journey is NOT mine, son should pay for that journey and "a whole lotta other chit"...those are his exact words. So, me chattin him up about this was NOT gonna happen. ( I am not suppose to know anyway) Everybody, that I love is pretty upset with me so I gotta stop writing on this thread. Son even called is Grandad (my Nupe daddy) and asked if he could "do something with me". Gotta go...serious lunch with my father in 10 minutes Bye on this thread...BYE!
