I'm a bit of a lurker but I've been around HBCU Connect for quite some time now...and I'd like to comment on this erroneous definition of private vs. public:
public club -marketed to everyone
basic criteria to get in
in everyone's faces
funded by national orgs
private club
not marketed to everyone
specific people get in
very strict criteria
funded by themselves
This doesn't make sense for the basic fact that most private colleges/universities are 'marketed' to large groups of people and have general criteria for entrance...but allow me to clarify...
A public institution, group, club, or anything else defined as 'public' is something that is supported by government funds and/or labor. The money is paid by everyone, hence, 'public'. Hence public schools, public parks, public universities -- they are funded by government funds (whether local, state, or federal) and are generally free or cheaper than other services. It has nothing to do with selectivity or who it's marketed to. Some public insitutitions (such as the University of Georgia or the University of Virginia) are very selective, whereas others (such as community colleges) are not, and others (public K-12 schools) are open to everyone.
On the other hand, private organizations are those that are funded by means other than governmental aid. That can be donations from members or non-members, donations from corporations/businesses, or from selling/making a profit from something. Colleges such as Howard, Hampton, Spelman and Morehouse are private institutions because they hold their own endowment funds and are funded through that and donations from corporations and alumni, not through governmental funds. Greek organizations are private by virtue of their being self-funded and not by the government, NOT by who is allowed membership or who they market to.
