Okay, the purpose of this post is for anybody who feels they have something to offer the up and coming prospective HBCU students, whether it be tricks you've found helpful along the way, dealing with admissions people, getting around rules, the application process, essays, SAT and ACT scores and just basically anything that you feel is prevelent to getting on the right track toward your college of choice

Don't be afraid to speak for yourself. Parents won't always be there to handle yours for you. Also learn to be professional and how to speak when talkin' business. Stay on them if you want something done. BE PERSISTENT, NOT RUDE!!!! Apply for everything EARLY. Take your ACT/SAT early. That way you can hopefully get better scores, which will help ya out with acceptance and scholarships. Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Also, keep up with what you apply for. I also recommend FAXING everything. Call before hand and let them know that you are about to fax them so and so, fax it, CALL BACK, and make sure that they received it. That way, there are no discrepancies.

This is a biggie, but it almost always works! I know so many people who are doing their FAFSAs at the last minute as well. Make sure you have ALL of that ready ahead of time, even if the taxes aren't updated, you can always update it later. I sent my FAFSA January 2nd and then just updated it in February when my moms taxes were done. Another thing is stay open-minded during the college admissions process and if there's a college you want to go to, don't be afraid to apply. I didn't apply to a lot of schools because I was constantly thinking, "Nah, I won't get in..it'll be a waste of time applying." Now that I look back, I realized I should've sent in some of those applications. But the college I'm going to this fall is the same one I've wanted to go to since I was a Freshman, so I'm good.
