Job Description
Laborer
Ground maintenance includes digging trenches and ditches; mowing lawns; picking up of litter and trash, raking, sweeping, pruning and trimming trees and scrubs, and other manual labor tasks involving ground maintenance or cleanup operations. Uses rakes, hoes, shovels, picks, brooms, and other simple tools or equipment in the performance of ground maintenance. Also uses power equipment such as lawn mowers, edger, weed eaters, leaf blowers. Responsible for maintenance of wellness garden and interior plants; provides proper care, watering and fertilization, etc.; performs cosmetic are of plants and containers; recognizes & controls in frequent plants and diseases, and will be called upon to perform Bldg. 18 Waste Disposal responsibilities as needed.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30PM. Position may require overtime, shift, weekends, and holiday as required

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is the Ability to perform the duties of a Laborer, WG-3502-02, without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:
- Work Practices (including keeping things neat, clean and in order).
- Ability to Interpret instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints).
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
- Dexterity and Safety

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing from 10 to 20 pounds. Occasional lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds will be required of incumbent. Required to endure much standing, walking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, and other laboring bodily movements throughout assigned grounds tasks.

Working Conditions: The work is required to be in all areas of the Medical Center and grounds maintained by Environmental Services; Working conditions are primarily outdoors, but typically not in inclement weather. Incumbent might find themselves with a chance of acquiring minor injuries such as bruises, cuts and scrapes.
