Job Description
Psychiatrist

This announcement will also be used to fill multiple Psychiatrists vacancies at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, which includes:

Integrated Behavioral Health Care Team:
The IBHC provides collaborative care to veterans referred to them by PACT teams, which includes assessment, brief treatment, referral services, and medication management. The IBHC psychiatrist meets with veterans who would like to discuss medication management for mental health symptoms, prescribes medication, evaluates effectiveness, and when the veteran is stable on a medication regimen, discharges the veteran back to the PACT team for ongoing management, or refers the veteran to a higher level of Mental Health care (e.g. Addictive Disorders Treatment Program, PTSD Clinical Team, General Mental Health Clinic). It is anticipated that the IBHC psychiatrist would meet with veterans for 30 minute appointments, for a brief period of time to achieve mutually determined treatment goals (up to 6 sessions). The IBHC psychiatrist also consults with PACT team providers, and provides guidance and recommendations regarding prescribing practices to treat mental health symptoms

Mental Health Clinic:
Currently there is one vacancy in Reno and also one in Gardnerville. Mental Health Clinic psychiatrists have an assigned panel of patients. There is an opportunity to work with psychiatry residents who spend a year in the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic as a part of their residency program. The psychiatrist should be eligible for a clinical appointment at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. The psychiatry is expected to participate effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members. The psychiatrist participates in on-call duties, and performs other duties as assigned


Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, On-call service on nights, weekends, and/or holidays

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment.
