Job Description
Engineering Technician

These positions involve a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed above represent the full performance level of GS-10. At the GS-09 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-10. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Updates Facility Space Plans, using Computer Assisted Design (AutoCad) and Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA) Space file;
  • Tabulates department gross square footage and makes adjustments to reflect recent moves;
  • Updates Project Tracking Reports (PTR's) monthly to ensure accurate progress and cost accounting;
  • Assists in preparation of facility five-year comprehensive plan and five-year energy management plan;
  • Assists with energy audits of buildings and building service equipment and systems;
  • Performs calculations on energy consumption and prepares proposals for reducing energy consumption;
  • Prepares Independent Government Estimates (IGE) for competitively bid construction projects and maintenance and repair work;
  • Performs assessments in areas of maintenance and repair or remodeling to help determine the presence of asbestos;
  • Performs field measurements and gathers engineering data necessary for preparing construction drawings and specifications;
  • Performs field surveys using transit, level, and other standard surveying equipment;
  • Operates computer aided design and drafting equipment and personal computer equipment in the development of plans and specifications and performs computations;
  • Reviews preliminary design drawings and specifications for errors and omissions and technical soundness;
  • Reviews shop drawings and submittals from contractors during construction of new structures or renovation of existing structures for compliance with specifications;;
  • Performs analysis of mechanical and electrical building systems and heating and ventilation systems to identify deficiencies in condition or capacity;
  • Performs daily construction safety inspections of assigned projects and documents conditions.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-8) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of an Engineering Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes supervising, leading, or performing work involving applying a practical knowledge of the methods and techniques of engineering or architecture; and construction, application, properties, operations, and limitations of engineering systems, processes, structures, machinery, devices, and materials. Qualifying specialized experience includes technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
