Job Description
Surgical Technician

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment.
  • Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile instrumentation and surgical setup.
  • Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintain a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Assists the team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, obtaining supplies, and transportation to and from the OR.
  • Handles all specimens appropriately, including labeling, keeping organized on table and transporting to lab.
  • Provides patient information to the RN/Anesthesia Team for inclusion in the patient's plan of care.
  • Functions as second circulator for complex surgical procedures.
  • Assists in answering phones, and relaying messages as appropriate.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday through Friday, varied day shifts.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

To apply for this position, you must have the following qualifications:

GS-7 EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Surgical Technician GS-7. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in Federal service. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: working experience as a Surgical Technician in an operating room; performing complex surgeries; knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, protocol to select correct instruments for procedures, and aseptic techniques to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; uses and effects of anesthesia in order to recognize the hazards of anesthetic agents and to respond to adverse conditions during procedures; understands a wide variety of complex surgical procedures and possible complications; decontaminating a full range of reusable medical supplies and equipment, examining medical instruments for damage, deterioration or imperfections; assembling surgical trays or sets; arranging and passing surgical instruments and materials to surgical/health professionals.

GS-7 SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: One (1) year of graduate education at an accredited college or university with a major study in subjects directly related to the work of this position meets the requirements for the GS-7.

OR

GS-7 COMBINATION:
An equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for the GS-7 grade level.
