Job Description
Medical Instrument Technician (Gastroenterology)

The incumbent is assigned to the Medical Procedure Unit/Endoscopy of medicine Service performing various duties and tasks related to direct patient care, working under direct on site supervision of the registered nurse and attending physician when providing delegated patient care. Provides assistance to attending physician and RN caring for patients undergoing endoscopy procedures. Such assistance requires the employee to demonstrate skill in routine and emergent endoscopy and Transesophageal Echocardiograms procedures while using strict infection control practices. The incumbent will be responsible for setting up endoscopy procedures to include Colonoscopy, EGD, ERCP, Bronchoscopy, and TEE. This involves ensuring the correct Olympus endoscope or Phillips TEE probe is selected and all cleaning and reprocessing of equipment has been done properly, per manufactures instructions. Assists physician with cold and hot snare ploypectomy, cold tissue biopsies, Argon Plasma Coagulator, ERBE Irrigation system, Heme-clip, specimen brushing, BAL, Roth retrieval baskets for foreign objects, retrieval of polyps, Fine Needle Aspirations and banding of varices. Assists physician with various complex procedures such as: cannulation of ducts, sphintcherotomy with safe delivery of ordered endo-cut and coagulation settings, stone removal via balloon or lithotripter, stent placement and duct brushing. Incumbent will also assist physician with dilations, emergent life saving GI and Pulmonary procedures, surveillance of Barrett's Esophagus, small bowel enteroscopy and Transesophogeal Echocardiograms.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30, On call required on off tours

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. No person will be appointed under authority of 38U.S.C. chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA whois not proficient in written and spoken English.
Preferred Experience:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Certifications are desirable

Grade Determinations: GS-7
At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures.
2. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.
3. Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures.
4. Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOP's to clean reusable medical equipment (RME).
5. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.
6. Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies.
7. Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
