Job Description
Gardener (Tractor Operator)
Incumbent is responsible for care, maintenance, refurbishing and upkeep of all exterior areas of the facility, to include the building entrances, grounds, patios, roads, parking lots, parking garages and other paved surfaces, walks and smoking areas and shelters. Utilizes a wide variety, single function power equipment in accomplishing duties. These include riding and walk behind lawn mowers, chain saw and pole trimmers, hedge trimmers, string trimmers and leaf blowers, utility vehicles, articulating boom lift, backhoe/front loader and light pickup trucks. maintains all ground cover, turf, shrubs and flower beds by performing the following actions: keeping them free of weeds and trash, mowing, watering, apply mulch and fertilizer, edging, trimming and pruning of diseased, damaged, overgrown or rubbing limbs to assure healthy growth of vegetation and a neat appearance of beds, lawns, shrubs. Incumbent performs trimming and pruning of trees that can be safely accomplished from the ground. Incumbent maintains the irrigation system relating to water leaks, replacing sprinkler heads, and managing the controls/clock system. Keeps a wide variety of sprinkler heads, PVC pipes, and glue on hand for immediate repairs. If a significant repair is required, then the incumbent will contact and coordinate repairs through a qualified contractor. Uses and maintains a wide variety of hand tools to include broom, rake, shovel, hoe, post hold digger, shears, hand saw and mop. In addition to other duties also cleans all entrances to the hospital, courtyards and smoking areas on a daily basis and pressure washes and disinfects these areas weekly and/or more often as need arises.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Work is accomplished outside and incumbent is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun and periods of exposure to chilly and inclement weather Incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, mud, chemical handling, and dust in accomplishing duties and must wear appropriate protective gear, including respirators. This gear can become hot and uncomfortable and place added stress onto the worker. Incumbent is subject to bruises, cuts, scrapes, splinters due to the tools, equipment and materials used and falls. Incumbent is subject to dirt, dust, spray, fumes and odors from accomplishing job.
