Job Description
Dental Assistant
  • Practices four handed dentistry and passes instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently.
  • Assists in routine general dental procedures.
  • Shows courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude for patients and their family, co-workers, and the public.
  • Assists in implant placement and restoration.
  • Ability to take digital pantograph and tomography images for implant placements.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control procedures in setting up and cleaning for operations/procedures.
  • Maintain a clean environment in the dental lab.
  • Follows all HIPAA regulations in patient confidentiality.
Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Education:
  • Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on [Dental] Accreditation (CODA).
OR
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience [equivalent to] the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level.
OR
  • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
English Language Proficiency:
  • Dental assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Certification:
  • (a) Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.;
OR,
  • (b) Successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry.
OR,
  • (c) Successful completion of a radiation health and safety program or examination approved by a state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense (DoD).

Preferred Experience:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified.
Preferred Experience: At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and ability to evaluate diagnostic quality.
  • Broad knowledge of common medical emergencies and vital signs measurement.
  • Basic knowledge of instruments, materials and standardized dental procedures
  • Ability to learn and utilize software programs used within VHA.
  • Basic communication skills to provide patient instructions according to established protocol.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional. philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, include volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: Applicant's education and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicants selected.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-4 to GS-6.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs. or over). Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs.) Light lifting (15 lbs. and under). Light carrying (15 lbs. and under). Pushing (1 hour). Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingerprints. Both hands required. Walking (up to 4 hours). Standing (up to 8 hours). Kneeling (up to 2 hours). Repeated bending (up to 6 hours). Ability to rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16". Hearing (aid permitted).
