Job Description
Health Technician

The duties are listed below, but additional duties may apply:

  • Sets up sterile fields properly and in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains highly complex sterile surgical set-ups.
  • Follows all infection control and policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment.
  • Understands and follows the proper procedure and safety precautions for high level disinfecting instruments.
  • Functions as a primary scrub person for instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures.
  • Assures all supplies and equipment are available prior to surgical procedures.
  • Performs sponge and instrument counts with the highest degree of accuracy.
  • Accounts for all surgical instruments and equipment during surgical procedures.
  • Anticipates the need of the surgical team and responds with speed and accuracy.
  • Recognizes the hazards of anesthetic agents and responds to adverse conditions during the course of procedure.
  • Functions accurately under high stress situations and during complex medical procedures.
  • Provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures.
  • Participates with surgical team in the planning and implementation of complex procedures.
  • Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure.
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, the human anatomy and aseptic techniques.
  • Understands surgical protocol and recognizes and responds to a variety of critical and life-threatening situations.


Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Work Schedule: Shifts that range from 7am to 6:30 pm with on call time which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must have graduated from an educational institution within the last two years or are you a preference eligible veteran who has graduated within the last six years from an educational institution in a field that is related to the Health Technician position (Scrub Technician, Medical Technician, etc.), and must complete a training program.

You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below:

  • GS-04: 1 year, at least, of generalized experience in the health care field or a successful completion in a 2-year program that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position, or a combination of experience and education.

    GS-05: 1 year, at least, of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade, or successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related the Health Technician (Surgical Technician) position, or a combination of education or experience.

    GS-06: 1 year, at least, of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade, or Successful completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.e. Surgical technician, operating room experience, etc.).

    GS-07: 1 year, at least, of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade, or one full year of graduate education directly related to the Health Technician position (i.e. Surgical technician, operating room experience, etc.), or a combination of education and experience.

Specialized experience is experience that is related to performing duties that support setting up operating rooms, assisting in surgical procedures, and working with medical personnel in a surgical unit..

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent will regularly require manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of which are in stages of unconsciousness. The incumbent will have extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies to the surgeon. The incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon.
