Job Description
Motor Vehicle Operator - Intermittent Appointment
  • Transports workshop materials, food carts, hemodialysis supplies, laboratory specimens, surgical equipment, and very heavy hospital equipment requiring the use of a truck with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 28,000 pounds and a loading capacity of four tons or more with hydraulic type lift gates;
  • Transports patients when requested to meet program needs and facilitate clinic visits;
  • Assists patients in and out of vehicles which many be required carrying litter and wheelchair patients in and out of the station ambulance and wheelchair van;
  • Operates a bus with a capacity of more than 20 passengers when transporting patients, Nursing and Recreation Therapy staff to and from off-station activities;
  • Operates a four-wheel drive dump truck with a gross vehicle weight of 29,500 pounds and weight capacity of four tons, a pick-up truck and front-end loader to assist with winter clean-up operations or trips to area landfills;
  • Completes trip reports concerning mileage, time spent, and gasoline and oil purchased on assigned trips;
  • Reports all deficiencies in operation of vehicles to the Motor Vehicle Operator Foreman;
  • Drives vehicles to approved service centers and periodic inspections as well as to local car wash companies for thorough cleaning;
  • Makes minor repairs to a vehicle in an emergency such as flat tire, loose battery cables, etc.;
  • Uses proper lifting and pushing techniques and pallet jack when loading/unloading food carts and/or other equipment and workshop materials;
  • Uses road atlas and selects the shortest, most economical route possible when assigned a trip;
  • Follows rules and regulations governing both intrastate and interstate highway travel; and,
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Intermittent Schedule - Hours scheduled as required for ad hoc patient transportation needs.

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Must also be able to lift litter and wheelchair type patients into and out of ambulances, wheelchair vans and/or up and down stair ways and/or ramps as required. Assist non-ambulatory patients into and out of staff vehicles. The person in this position will be responsible for lifting up to 125 pounds.
The person in this position is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading food carts, workshop materials, medical equipment supplies and patients. Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Subject to cuts, bruises, or sprains as a result of accidents while driving and/or loading and unloading cargo and/or medical center related equipment or patients.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE (SCREEN OUT):
A valid state-issued Class A or Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License.
