Job Description
Health Aid
  • Transporting patients via wheelchair or gurney and/or accompanies ambulatory patients who need assistance to various areas within the hospital.
  • Distributing and retrieving patients in all sections of Radiology Service including Diagnostic Radiology, Radiation Therapy, Ultrasound and the computed tomography section.
  • Returning patients to their assigned wards and clinics upon completion of examination.
  • Observing patients continually while in the process of transporting and those waiting to be examined in Radiology Service to assure their well-being.
  • Recognizing and assisting in meeting patients emotional and clinical needs.
  • Noting and reporting any unusual changes in the conditions, behavior or demeanor of patients to the appropriate personnel or physician in charge to which the patient is assigned.
  • Tending to the personal needs of patients by furnishing assistance to rest rooms, obtaining and emptying bed pans and urinals when needed.
  • Assisting physicians, nurses, and radiology staff in the movement and transfer of patients from wheelchair, carts, and radiological equipment.

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements within 15 calendar days of the closing date listed on the announcement:

  • Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
    • The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
    • An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
      • Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
  • Applicants must be eligible under the VA Interchange Agreement, having served continuously for at least one year in the other merit system under this interchange agreement.   • All Title 38 Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) employees must have served in their Excepted Service position for at least 90 days in order to be eligible for a position within the Competitive Service.
  • Applicants who were previously selected under a Competitive Delegating Examining Unit (DEU) announcement must have served in their position for at least 90 days prior to being eligible for other positions within the Competitive Service.In addition to the qualification above you must also have:
General Experience: You must possess at least six months of general experience to qualify for the GS-3 level in the Federal service. Examples of general experience would be experience that provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and which is typically related to the work of the position to be filled.

OR

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you mut have successfully completed one-year above high school with courses that included study in medical, health, or related field.

OR

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of the education and experience described above to qualify at the GS-03 level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

    • If you have previously held a higher grade and are applying based on that grade, you must provide a copy of the SF-50 showing you held the higher grade in addition to your last or most recent SF-50 indicating proof of status.
    • Note: Your SF-50 must reflect the grade and step information equivalent to or greater than the grade lower than the position you are applying to.

  • If prior military service, include all copies of your DD-214 or proof of service as well as proof of disability, if applicable.
    • You must submit your documentation showing character of discharge.
