Job Description
Nurse Practitioner for Urology

Duties:
Work closely with the Urology Surgery physicians to provide high-quality, comprehensive patient care.
Perform preoperative history and physical evaluations per current AHA guidelines. History and physical examinations, focusing on risk factors for cardiac, pulmonary and infectious complications, and a determination of a patient's functional capacity, are to be performed and are essential to the urologic preoperative evaluation.
Evaluate and manage common urologic diseases (gain mastery in complete urologic history and exam).
Conduct counseling and management of erectile dysfunction.
Meet regularly with Urology physicians to review urologic imaging and diagnostic results..
Track abnormal lab results to confirm that patient has had appropriate follow-up as ordered in the patient's plan of care.
Act as a resource for patients requesting lab results and requisition.
Triaging patient phone calls and making follow-up clinically related calls.
Assist with guiding patients through the surgical process.
Appropriately triage Urology consults, consistently identifying urgent/emergent consults.
See new patients of the practice for first evaluation and discussion of treatment options.
Assist in coordinating perioperative planning.
Determine need for medical clearance and ensure contact and documentation with appropriate providers.
Review perioperative course with patients in advance of surgery at the MVAMC, including cardiac testing, imaging, etc.), timing of surgery, anesthesia evaluation, preoperative lab testing and follow up, anticipated hospital course, prescription information.
Coordinate follow-up patients after discharge and coordinate the evaluation and management of the recovery period, including postoperative complications.
Respond to Urology patient calls and secure messaging (My Health-E Vet).
Function as a team member, providing backup coverage when required.
Be available as a resource for Urology health questions for non-Urology providers.
Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Full-time M-F

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted APRN registration in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Urology experience

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (up to 35 lbs); Moderate Carrying (15-35 lbs); Reaching Above Shoulder; Ability and dexterity of hand(s) to manage gross and fine motor tasks of patient care (i.e. IV insertion, wound care management, etc.); Walking Throughout Assigned Shift; Standing As Duties Require; Kneeling as Duties Require; Repeated Bending As Duties Require; Near Vision Correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far Vision Correctable in One Eye To 20/50 and to 20/100 In the Other; Color Vision; Hearing (aid permitted); and Specific Hearing Requirements.
