Job Description
Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic
This position is that of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic. Responsibility includes repair, maintenance, modification and operation of various special-purpose air condition units and systems (e.g. chillers, cascade ultra-low environmental equipment, multiplex refrigeration coolers and freezer cold storage plant systems, large steam heating hot water heat exchangers, air handling units up 60,000 CFM1 s, gas fired heating hot water boilers and all associated equipment and peripheral devices and controls). These systems are frequently modified to provide specific and critical climate ,conditions. A majority of the work involved is completed and trouble shot using vague, hard to read, and at times with no type of technical guidance on the systems. These types of insufficient and ambiguous technical guidance force the technician/mechanic to make difficult yet challenging decisions to complete required tasks. technician/mechanic to make difficult yet challenging decisions to complete required tasks. The air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems range from small window units up to 1,400-ton centrifugal chillers, refrigeration units range from a very small water cooler or household refrigerator up to a large 30-ton deep freeze cold storage units, some of which operate up to minus 80 degrees Celsius. The medical center's air conditioning and heating system and an surrounding facilities are interfaced and controlled by a large complex (EMCS) Energy Management Control System to maintain comfortable cooling and heating temperatures.

Work Schedule: 7am-3:30pm, On call nights and weekends including holidays

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The screen-out element for this position is: Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic: this work includes the ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A JOURNEY MAN AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. This ability requires, but it not limited to, the ability to: repair, maintenance, modification and operation of various special-purpose air condition units and systems (e.g. chillers, cascade ultra-low environmental equipment, multiplex refrigeration coolers and freezer cold storage plant systems, large steam heating hot water heat exchangers, air handling units up 60,000 CFM's, gas fired heating hot water boilers and all associated equipment and peripheral devices and controls).

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Troubleshooting
  • Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; Heavy carrying, 45 pounds and over; Straight pulling (2_ hours); Pulling hand over hand (2_ hrs) ; Pushing (2A,_ hours) ; Reaching above shoulder ; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (2 hours); Standing (6 hours); Crawling (.25 hours); Kneeling (.50 hours); Repeated bending (.75_hours); Climbing, legs only (.50_ hours); Climbing, use of legs and arms Both legs required; Operation of crane, truck, tractor or motor vehicle; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Ability to use and desirability of using firearms; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Other (specify):Mental and Emotional Stability.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic work Monday through Friday on days but on special occasion may be required to work other shifts and overtime call-back. The mechanic is required to work outside in all types of weather and inside and on top of tall buildings, and in close area air handling equipment. Uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing will be worn when there is a possibility of exposure to harmful elements; i.e., heat cold chemicals. Will have to work in freezer units where the temperature is below freezing. Will be subject to cuts burns, electrical shock and respiratory conditions.

Additional requirement for this position: Must hold current Universal Certification to recover, reclaim, and recycle refrigerants. Please include copy of this certificate with application submission.
