Job Description
Dietitian - GS 11

The RD must possess the required knowledge and skills in order to perform the following functions which include, but are not limited to:

Nutrition Care:
Conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) for patients at nutritional risk by accurately obtaining and interpreting available nutrition and medical information.

Nutrition Education:
Assesses nutrition education needs and provides nutrition education/counseling/coaching for individuals and groups.
Considers the learning style/readiness, nutritional, medical, psychosocial, behavioral, ethnic, religious, cultural, and age-related factors of the patient.
Utilizes TEACH (Tune In, Explore, Assist, Communicate, Honor) and Motivational Interviewing principles in education/counseling/coaching encounters with patients.

Participation as a Member of the Health Care Team/Collaboration:
Contributes to the overall care of Veterans by serving as the nutrition expert on the interdisciplinary treatment team which includes physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals.
Advises interdisciplinary health care team of nutritional recommendations, goals, and efficacy of nutrition therapy.

Customer Service:
Meets the needs of the customers (Veterans, Veterans' representatives, visitors, community members, and all staff) while supporting the missions of the VA.
Consistently communicates and treats customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

Information Security:
Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with Provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy.
Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, and unauthorized deletion.

Professional Development:
Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.
Develops and implements an individualized plan for professional growth and development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and staff development programs.

Quality, Performance Improvement, and Research:
Develops and reports on quality monitors related to assigned work unit.

Work Schedule: Mon - Fri, 8:00am until 4:30pm

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Individual must have earned a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, and fulfilled each of the following criteria:
  • Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE).
  • Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program.
  • All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
GS-11 Dietitian (Full Performance Level):
At least 1 year of experience as a registered dietitian equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09), or education equivalent to 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited university or college in the field of dietetics or closely related field.
Assignment: Employees at this grade level serve as staff dietitians at the full performance level. Registered dietitians are responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutrition care activities (e.g., food service and/or clinical nutrition). Registered dietitians serve as important members of the interdisciplinary team of care providers, and focus on offering exceptional nutrition care and guidance to optimize health. Registered dietitians work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, outpatient centers, residential treatment programs and patient homes. They are responsible for using evidence-based approaches to develop menus, counsel patients and provide nutrition care.

In addition to the experience above, the GS-11 candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of best practices in the dietetics profession and in scientific literature, including knowledge of research methods, study design, data collection, interpretation of findings, and translation of results into nutrition practice.
2. Ability to comply with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities.
3. Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies.
4. Knowledge of computer software programs relative to food service systems.
5. Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition care and the treatment of complex cases in clinical settings in order to develop, implement and coordinate best practices in the dietetics profession (e.g. assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation).
6. Knowledge of best practices in areas of clinical nutrition and the ability to apply nutrition interventions to patients with multiple co-morbidities.
7. Ability to act as a consultant for health care providers including registered dietetic technicians, dietetic interns, nurses, physicians, medical students, and allied health professionals.
8. Ability to direct food service and production with focus on customer acceptance and budgetary guidelines to include principles of menu planning, food purchasing, delivery schedules, and ability to estimate food quantities.
9. Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies.
10. Knowledge of computer software programs relative to food service systems.
11. Knowledge of the principles of management required to establish program goals and objectives, to plan and administer a program, coordinate associated activities, evaluate program accomplishments, redefine priorities, solve problems, and modify objectives.

Physical Requirements:
The position is largely sedentary but does require repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive keyboard and computer mouse use, standing and sitting for extended periods of time, intermittent/non-strenuous ambulation around all areas of the health care system, and carrying small amounts of written/reference materials. Occasionally, duties may require the movement of audio-visual equipment and/or classroom area organization.

Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in the acute-care hospital setting, outpatient care areas, food production and service areas, and occasionally in community settings. The RD-FPL work involves patient contact with some risk of exposure to infectious disease, and occasional exposure to the noise and hazards of equipment in the kitchen and other areas of the health care system. Contact with people who have physical and/or psychological disabilities, acute mental health issues, and/or infectious disease(s) is to be expected.
