Job Description
IT Specialist (OS/CUSTSPT)
Major Duties

- Ensures updates on all servers and systems are performed on a regular basis; upgrading required systems when available; ensuring firmware updates to hardware; installing new technologies

- Maintains, manages, and monitors virtual environments; and creating on-demand, elastic, self- managing virtual infrastructures that can be allocated dynamically utilizing infrastructure resources more effectively (e.g.
vSphere).

- Applies system engineering concepts and methods; optimization concepts and methods; software design theories and concepts; troubleshoots issues with the virtual environment by applying analytical skills and problem-solving methods; and works with vendors to validate best practice and performance settings.

- Thoroughly documents tasks that are to be completed daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly for each operating system project into standard operation procedures (SOPs) that are published for reference and reviewed on a continual basis for accurateness.

- Develops policies, procedures, and strategies that ensure optimization and integration in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of the operating environment (which include but are not limited to Smart Classroom Training Guides, Technical Guides for implementation and management of Smart Classroom zero client devices, and virtual machine implementation and management)

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary, but may involve periods of walking, bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, moving (up to 50 pounds) components and supplies, reaching, pulling, and working at a keyboard and monitor. Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Job experience managing/operating: zero clients, virtual servers, Storage Area Networks, and virtual web clients (such as: VMware vSphere, VMWare Horizon View). the position requires the expertise corresponding to the specialization in distance education technologies, including video teleconferencing and virtualization technologies. Utilize features to maintain and monitor virtualization platforms. to maintain and monitor virtualization platforms, using computers and zero/thin clients, troubleshooting issues within a virtual environment when utilizing zero/thin clients such as virtual machines, hosts, virtual server and virtual web client, clusters, storage, and licensing, virtualization hardware, utilizing network management tools to monitor performance, calculate bandwidth, and scan for errors, strong knowledge and experience with virtualization technologies (e.g. VMware, VMWare Horizon View), and experience troubleshooting, deploying and optimizing SANs.

Such experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
