Job Description
Physician (Psychiatrist In-Patient)

Functions as a provider in the psychiatry specialty. The staff psychiatrist will be responsible for the overall psychiatric care of patients with conditions requiring treatment in his/her specialty to include consultative, prescriptive and ordering authority in the inpatient and residential settings at the LAJVAMC. The incumbent will ensure the quality and timeliness of the services provided and collaborates with referring providers.

- Clinical duties include but are not limited to: provision of psychiatric care in an inpatient and residential setting including evaluation, diagnosis, management, and follow-up of psychiatric patients, review and make recommendations for transfer to a tertiary care center when appropriate, serve as an attending to medical students and psychiatry residents, call duties, and inpatient coverage.

- Consult/Liaison services to include Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, Inpatient Medical Unit, and Emergency Department at LAJVAMC.

- Intervenes with appropriate individuals/departments/agencies regarding delays in service that may have an impact on quality of patient care, length of stay or inappropriate patient admissions. Work as a collaborate team with assigned nurse case manger when appropriate.

- Assesses patient's/family's adaptation to patient illness and ability to provide for patient's care needs and provide resources in areas that are identified as areas for improvement.

- Serves as a resource to the interdisciplinary team for community based social service agencies and VA programs.

Work Schedule: Seven days on seven days off. Will have on call responsibilities. Schedule may change based on the needs of the Medical Facility.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). If selected for this position, you are encouraged to apply for this award program and must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VA Policy 1021. Award amount is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation and final approval by the Under Secretary for Health or designated official.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; light carrying (under 15 pounds); reaching above the shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking 6 hours; standing 6 hours; both eyes required; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability; sitting 8 hours.
