Job Description
Histopathology Technician/Autopsy Assistant

The technician will be responsible for troubleshooting issues with instruments and resolving problems. This position requires practical knowledge of the anatomic pathology laboratory practice in multiple areas (i.e. histopathology, cytology and autopsy). For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The duties and responsibilities of a Histopathology Technician includes, but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with federal regulations associated with the Clinical Lab Improvement Act of 1988
  • Applies professional, complex anatomical pathology principles, practices, concepts and theories in performing new or difficult specialized testing methods or techniques
  • Provides technical oversight of laboratory quality control and assurance
  • Validates methodologies, operate anatomic pathology laboratory equipment and perform complex instrument troubleshooting.
  • Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all processing tasks of the histopathology technician occupation involving anatomic pathology and performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures
  • Adheres to practices and regulations governing safety in the laboratory
  • Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instruction and training of new employees.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously, gives directions and guidance using underlying histopathology and cytopathology principles while working as a healthcare team member and while providing excellent service as defined by the customer
  • Organizes work and sets priorities to meet deadlines
  • Ensures and maintains accurate patient identification
  • Assists in autopsy procedures and the maintenance of the autopsy suite, as needed

This is a Bargaining Unit position.
Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday, Weekends, Holidays, Days, Evenings, Rotating, 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. & Various shifts

Specialized Experience: For positions at GS-7 and above: 1 year equivalent to at least next lower grade level, GS-6
OR
Education: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position.

Grade Determinations: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform moderate lifting up to 40lbs., straight pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking, sitting or standing for up to 2 hour, kneeling, repeated bending, use of both arms and legs. Specific visual requirements include use of both eyes, depth perception, ability to distinguish color and shades of colors, hearing (aids permitted), clear, high cognitive function and emotional stability; ability to read ordinary type without strain.
