Biological Science Laboratory Technician
NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 Years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition.
NOTE: This is a part-time position (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

The Biological Science Laboratory Technician will be working for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA San Diego Healthcare System VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Research/Development Service. The primary purpose of the Biological Science Laboratory Technician (BLST) is to perform aspects of molecular biology and small animal studies.

Some of the major duties include:
Manages the breeding colony and collect tissue for genotyping.
Controls the receipt, storage and preparation of specimens.
Performs routine molecular biology experiments including DNA isolation from tissue and PCR for genotyping.
Cleans laboratory dishes and glassware, operates an autoclave to sterilize laboratory glassware, equipment and surgical tools and maintains a neat and orderly work area.
Works daily with laboratory terminology and equipment.
Works with animal handling procedures.
Performs other related duties as assigned, such as booking travel and meeting rooms.

Work Schedule: Part Time 20 hours a week, (will be discuss during interview, based on the agency needs)

To qualify for the Biological Sciences Lab Technician GS-0404-6, you must meet one of the following:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One (1) year of specialized experience and education directly related to the position. To be creditable, this experience and education must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service that is directly related to the position. Specialized experience includes: Experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Research activity or control program work.
  • Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment.
  • Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.
Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience. Additional Specialized Experience: Performing mouse handling, manage a transgenic mouse colony, husbandry and humane forms of euthanasia; performing basic molecular biology experiments including DNA isolation from tissue and PCR for genotyping, cloning, and plasmid preps, microscopy and/or immunolabeling is preferred but not required, mammalian cell transfection, bacterial and mammalian cell culture; following guidelines to evaluate sample quality/purity according to accepted standards.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Successful completion of (6) months of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
OR
COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript required): Equivalent combinations of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education as described above to meet the total experience requirements to qualify at the GS-6 level, for this position. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
