Job Description
Physician (Assistant Associate Chief of Staff - Primary Care)

Primary oversight will take place within Primary Care services. The incumbent must possess clinical knowledge that provides the ability to manage a primary care program, specifically with regards to standards of care, clinical guidelines, customer satisfaction, quality of services provided, access for services, coordination of care, patient-centered medical home concepts, and efficiency of service delivery. This position requires leadership, clinical administrative excellence, as well as the ability to develop strong relationships with providers they serve. Frequent travel to the clinics they supervise will be included. This position will be required to operate a government vehicle regularly.

The following is a summary of the major essential function of this job. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Administrative (80%)
The Assistant ACOS for Primary Care is responsible for supporting the ACOS in planning, organizing, developing, implementing, controlling, and refining a comprehensive patient management/clinical support/administrative program which provides services and technical counsel necessary to meet clinical, procedural, legal and administrative requirements relating to the care and treatment of outpatients to achieve maximum utilization of patient care resources in a cost-effective, efficient, and timely manner. Broad clinical and administrative expertise is required to meet the needs of this widespread urban and rural health patient population, in order to integrate primary care functions among the Medical Center and CBOCs, and coordinate Veteran care with other VA and non-VA entities.
Clinical (20%)
Provides coverage for patient care duties commensurate with his/her time, providing direct patient care. This work will be 20% of the time, however clinical responsibilities may be adjusted due to service needs. This aspect of the position is deemed critical to ensure credibility, assessment of existent systems of care, development of interpersonal relationships with providers and patients, and to maintain an ongoing competency in patient-care duties.

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Monday through Friday, May be required to work some evenings and weekends)

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience/Certification: Board eligibility or certification by a Primary Care Board is highly desired.

Physical Requirements: This position requires extension of the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction including above or below shoulder level, including retrieval of needed equipment and supplies. This position requires the maintenance of an upright position to perform duties such as those associated with patient care.This position requires moving about to accomplish tasks, such as delivering mail. This position requires the raising of objects from a lower position to a higher position or the movement of objects horizontally position to position. Lifting may be done in the movement of equipment or supplies. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force. This position requires writing or otherwise working with fingers and/or hands, including one or both hands to include duties such as entering information into the computer, etc. This position requires substantial movements (motion) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, as is done when entering information into the computer.

Note: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification before the starting date of the position. The BLS requirement is satisfied by successfully completing an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Course or Military Training Network (MTN). No online certifications will be accepted.
