Job Description
Physician Assistant (Gastroenterology)

Screen all consults for therapeutic endoscopy procedures, advanced procedures and those requiring anesthesia, and schedules accordingly.

Schedule patients for the appropriate procedure(s), following discussion with attending physicians and/or Chief of Endoscopy.

Negotiate appointment dates and time with patients.

Assists in arranging for housing for patients living >50 miles from MEDVAMC and/or assists in arranging hospital admissions if indicated.

Educate the patients and/or caretakers regarding appropriate preparation for procedures.

Order all necessary pre-procedure laboratory tests, imaging exams and medications.

Coordinate IFC patients referred for specialized testing and/or procedures.

Perform initial history and physical examinations on outpatients in GI Endoscopy Unit, GI PreScreen Clinic and GI Specialty Prime Care Clinics.

Perform and complete pre-assessment evaluations and documents findings in CPRS, endoscopy templates and all other required MEDVAMC forms.

Educate patients, their family and/or caretakers regarding their disease process, management plans, and potential outcomes; in conjunction with supervising attending physicians.

Obtain informed consent for all routine, therapeutic and advanced endoscopic procedures.

Contact patients both pre- and post-procedures to confirm appointments, give preparation instructions, follow-up on outcomes, and disseminate information.

Review all pathology and sends letters with the final results to patients.

Ensure malignant pathology is reviewed by attending physician who performed the procedure.

Answer phone requests from patients in a timely manner (within 24 hours).

Provide primary care and routine follow-up to patients enrolled in GI clinic.

Screen outpatients to determine need for immediate and further care to include history and physical exams and consultation (generally via phone) with the patient's primary care provider.

Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice.

Prescribe the standard GI Endoscopy Colonoscopy Prep and other pre-procedure preps.

Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, X-rays, electrocardiograms.

Coordinate admissions as needed by the patient and as dictated by training.

Review all laboratory data for all endoscopy and Pre-Screen patients and notify endoscopy attending physicians regarding significant abnormalities.

Schedule diagnostic tests (CT scans, ultrasounds, MRI, MRCP, etc.).

Work Schedule: Full Time, 7:30am - 4:00pm

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Education: Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; AND a Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Certification: Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) Note: Current VA Physician Assistant's employed prior to March 12, 1993 who are not NCCPA certified, remain exempt.
Preferred Experience: Registered Respiratory Therapist with strong critical care /ventilator management experience. Experience with 840 ventilators required. Texas State License, CPR Required. ACLS, Rapid Response Team and Intubation experience preferred.

Grade Determinations: Will be made by the Physician Assistant Professional Standards Board based on the information provided by on the Resume and VA Form10-2850c provided.
