Job Description
Security Assistant

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves as a central dispatcher by receiving all routine and emergency phone calls for assistance;
  • Conducts hourly radio station checks as required by Federal Communications (FCC) and radio checks every 30 minutes with uniformed Police Officers;
  • Performs work related to the collection, organization, and/or tracking of information in support of the law enforcement program;
  • Monitors and operates the National Crime Information Center computer system (NCIC);
  • Monitors the Fire Alarm panel and BASIS Alarm system, to include adjusting access levels as needed for staff;
  • Maintains oversight of key control throughout the shift;
  • Manages the Carpool, Handicap temporary passes plan, and the VA Staff parking sticker system in Police data system;
  • Performs general office work such as filing and data entry.
WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time; 12 hour shifts, rotating weekend coverage.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal Service that has given you the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Security Assistant GS-5. Specialized experience includes: working knowledge of law enforcement programs, methods, and procedures; carrying out support tasks related to police administration; receiving routine and emergency phone calls and dispatching support personnel; managing an identification system, key management system, parking sticker system, etc.; and performing clerical/administrative tasks using a variety of office automation software to produce documents and maintain a wide range of security records. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title; duties; month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.

EDUCATION: Four (4) years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in any field which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is usually 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

COMBINATION: Equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. For the GS-05 only the semester hours in excess of the first 60 semester hours can be used in place of experience. NOTE: Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.
