Job Description
Pathologist Specialist

The duties of the Pathology Specialist includes:

* Performing gross examination and sectioning of surgical pathology specimens.
* Performing or requesting specialized tests including histochemical and immunohistochemical stains and flow cytometry.
* Assisting with evaluation and implementation of new equipment and ordering supplies.
* Embedding, cutting, staining and labeling of routine histology.
* Providing technical guidance for histopathology technicians, writing or assisting in the writing of histology procedures, and developing new histology techniques.
* Developing or participating in the development of Anatomic Pathology protocols.
* Inspection of the autopsy permission form for completeness and correctness.
* Assisting with the autopsy at the direction of the pathologist or pathology residents, correlation of the gross pathology.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work required long periods of standing while performing gross examinations and teaching others to do so, recurring bending over when performing frozen sections and autopsies, occasional lifting of heavy items (containers and pushing carts may require the application of 80-100 lbs of force) and above average dexterity in dissecting specimens and cutting frozen sections.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work involves regular and recurring exposures to irritating and volatile organic solutions, and potentially infectious material. Protective gear and special safety precautions are required. The Pathology Specialist use protective agents such as a laboratory coat, gloves, mask, and eye protective devices as necessary.

WORK SCHEDULE: 7:00am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday

Promotion Potential: If the position possesses promotion potential, the selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-07) in the normal line of progression for the occupation . Specialized experience includes: Knowledgeable about gross anatomy and pathologic abnormalities and familiar with gross examination and sectioning,and permanent and frozen section techniques and standard histochemical stains; Professional knowledge of Anatomic Pathology and its application in solving very complex problems involving diverse aspects of Anatomic Pathology practice; Knowledge and skill sufficient to use and maintain complex instruments(e.g., microtome, cryostat, cameras, bone saw, and automated tissue processor); and Knowledgeable of regulatory, licensing, and accrediting agency requirements, medicolegal responsibilities, and statutes governing clinical laboratory operations.

EDUCATION: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-09 level. Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the Pathology Specialist, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-9 level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. (Transcript required)
