Job Description
Animal Caretaker

The incumbent will serve as an Animal Caretaker 2 in the Veterinary Unit Medical (VMU) for the Medical Center Research Service under the direction of the VMU Supervisor, at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System, New Orleans, Louisiana. The incumbent will have direct responsibility of providing care to research animals by practicing standardized husbandry procedures to ensure coordination of care. The incumbent must learn and support the Medical Center and Facility Supervisor's mission, function, organization structure, program responsibilities and relations with outside agencies and the private industry.

The incumbent will provide Humane Care and use of species including mice, rats, small animals. Animal Caretaker WG-06 will conduct all job duties of Caretaker WG-05 with additional duties, to include assistance to the research and veterinary personnel with animal handling and administration of medications and treatments. Additionally, the incumbent may train Caretakers WG-05.; monitor breeding and identification of all animals in the colony and assure that required documentation is maintained. He/she will provide administrative support for work orders and cage cards etc; maintain cleanliness of animal rooms and repair all equipment used by the animals as well as support areas as assigned and assure that all Standard Operating Procedures(SOP) are followed per VMU policies.

The incumbent will conduct twice daily animal room checks for animal health, food, water, cage condition and/or facility abnormalities and will report to the VMU supervisor; dispose of deceased animals according to VMU procedures, and change animal caging, to include feed and water, and/or specifically approved protocols and the schedule established by the supervisor.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the 5000 - PLAN AND ANIMAL WORK FAMILY, WG-5048-05 ANIMAL CARETAKER.. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work assignments involve standing, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, etc.; catching, restraining, and lifting agile but docile animals, equipment, supplies, and objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Normal color vision is required.
