Job Description
Physician (Emergency Department)

The Physician is responsible for participating in the day-to-day clinical and administrative activities of the Emergency Department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: emergent intake, patient assessment, patient history, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies and emergent resuscitation. The Physician interprets ECGs and selected radiographic tests; performs invasive procedures for which incumbent is credentialed; initiates consults as well as referrals after discharge from the Emergency Department, and prescribes medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy and VA formulary and State regulations.

The incumbent will have a joint affiliation appointment with the University of Michigan Department Of Internal Medicine. Providing service on an academic inpatient general medicine ward is also a potential with this position.

Work Schedule: Multiple Work Schedules that may include evening, holiday, and weekend shifts.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Preferred experience for this position is a candidate who is residency trained and board-certified/eligible in Emergency and/or Internal Medicine and fulfills the qualifications for a faculty appointment at the University of Michigan. In addition, it is preferred the candidate have teaching experience in the acute and ambulatory setting.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
