Job Description
Physician (Gynecologist)

Dallas VA Medical Center is actively recruiting a board certified/board eligible gynecologist/surgeon for a leadership position as Chief, Gynecology Section, Surgical Service, to participate in our clinical practice and teaching programs. We have an active affiliation with UT Southwestern Medical Center. Applicants must be board certified or become board certified within 24 months of employment. Candidates will be expected to participate in the clinical practice at the VA North Texas Health Care System. Clinical responsibilities include the full spectrum of operative and non-operative management of gynecology patients. There is no Obstetrics component to the practice. The service is currently staffed with an Advanced Practice Nurse / Physician Assistant who would report the gynecologist. In addition, a Women's Health physician in Internal Medicine serves as a willing partner in the delivery of care to female veterans. The Women's Health Physician manages much of routine health maintenance and care of female veterans, allowing the gynecologist to focus much of his/her time on the surgical treatments of gynecological problems. An interest or expertise in pelvic floor disorders is very helpful, but not required, for this position. An interest in robotic surgery is also a benefit, but not required of the applicant.
Potential duties associated with the position include receiving, reviewing, and acting upon consults and E-consults, admitting, history and physical, preparing treatment plans, diagnosis and treatment of gynecological and urological conditions, abdominal urethropexy, abdominal scar revision, anterior/posterior colporrhaphy w/wo mesh, biopsy of urethra, bladder repair, bowel repair, chromopertubation, colpocleisis, colpotomy, cul-de-sac drainage, cystocele repair or perineorrhaphy, cystoscopy, dilatation & curettage.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday with variable hours and rotating weekends and call coverage.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: General Surgery Board Certification is highly desired

Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs); light carrying (15 lbs and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
