Job Description
MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Follows procedures for patient identification, sample procurement and specimen labeling;
  • Performs blood collection by venipuncture or capillary collection techniques using approved methodology for sample collection to include the importance of proper patient identification;
  • Performs timed specimen collection such as therapeutic drug peak and trough levels and tests that involve differing collection requirements (Le. use of chilled tubes, pre-warmed tubes, etc.);
  • Performs special procedures, for example, administration of oral products such as glucola for glucose tolerance testing, and obtaining specimens for forensic or medico legal purposes;
  • Accessions and acknowledges specimens using the laboratory computer system or designated backup system and established guidelines;
  • Evaluates suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if determined to be unusable;
  • Prepares blood and urine specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories, requiring knowledge of laboratory test requirements and specimen storage, suitability, and integrity requirements;
  • Performs testing set-ups for chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis, which involves multiples steps and interrelationships;
  • Performs work involving routine and specialized test and examination using the techniques of medical laboratory practices in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and microbiology;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Full Time - Monday - Friday - 11:30 AM - 8:00 PM

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

Experience: You must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a phlebotomist. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week.

Education Substitution:
You must have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position being filled which may include clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

Combination of Education and Experience
: You must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience that may be used to meet total experience requirements. This education must include courses directly related to the work of the position (as described above). This education must have been obtained in an accredited technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
