Job Description
Program Support Assistant

The incumbent serves as the timekeeper for all of Patient Care Services. These duties include assisting nursing personnel in fulfilling responsibilities and assignments, having an impact on the specific areas as well as duties having a direct impact on the fiscal performance of the facility. The incumbent receives/screens incoming calls and handles routine office matters. In the performance of official duties the incumbent has regular access to printed and electronic files containing information which is protected under the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws and regulations.

Work schedule: MONDAY-FRIDAY, 7 am to 3:30 pm. However, subject to change based on needs of the service.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, mail, small parts, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-4. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Performing clerical and assistant tasks in support of a program; reviewing documentation and verifying document authenticity; demonstrated skill with computer software; paying close attention to detail and providing customer service. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. (To receive credit for these skills they must be documented in your application/resume.)

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a bachelor's degree or four full academic years of education beyond high school leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-05 level. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. (If you are using education to qualify, transcripts are required.).
OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and successfully completed post-high school education that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position is fully qualifying at the GS-05 level. To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Only education in excess of 60 semester hours may be used to qualify. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. (If you qualify based on a combination, your experience must be documented in your application/resume and transcripts are required.)
