Job Description
Physician (Chief of Surgery)

The Chief of Surgery is responsible for:

  • The operation and supervision of Surgery Service
  • Ensuring the Surgical Program complies with VHA, TJC, OIG, OSHA and other oversight regulations, directives, handbooks, and policies pertaining to surgical operations
  • Managing surgical care quality to include performance measures, monitors, and indicators as applicable to Surgical Service oversight
  • Projecting and implementing efficient resource management through both short and long-term strategic business planning
  • Collaborating and representing Surgery Service in Medical Executive Board, Credentialing and Privileging, and various required Surgical committees
  • Enforcing personnel policies, ethical standards, and performance standards through Human Resource Management and EEO/Federal Regulation
  • Defining scope of practice/privileges for Surgical personnel and compliance with VHA credentialing and privileging processes in coordination with the Medical Professional Standards Board for Focused and ongoing Professional Practice evaluations
  • Participating in the ongoing professional development of all surgical resident physicians who intermittently work with affiliates under the Academic Affiliation Agreement
  • Regularly providing presentations/information to Facility leadership in regards to Surgical Program initiatives, performance management and required resources
  • Manages Access and Customer Service for Surgery Service

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 am - 4:30 pm)

The incumbent for this position may be eligible to apply for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), up to $120,000 depending on the amount of verified qualifying debt balance and funding availability. Eligibility to apply does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Approval for EDRP awards are subject to the availability of funding and other qualifying factors.   • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery

Physical Requirements:
Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; Moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking up to 6 hours, both legs required; near vision correctable 13" to 16" to jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; both eyes required; hearing (aid permitted); specific hearing requirements; Mental and Emotionally stable; working alone.
