Job Description
Clinical Dietetic Technician

As a Clinical Dietetic Technician for the MOVE! Weight Management Program, the incumbent is a paraprofessional who provides high-level assistance and support to the clinical dietitians. The Clinical Dietetic Technician is responsible for the more basic functions of nutritional care for patients enrolled in the MOVE! Program which includes teaching classes, individual in-person and telephone care appointments, and Minneapolis Intensive Weight Management Program.Incumbent performs a variety of dietetic duties following established methods and procedures under the guidance of the MOVE! Coordinator and/or the clinical dietitian in the MOVE! Program.

  • Conducts classes in basic nutrition to groups of patients / caregivers to provide them with knowledge that will enable them to choose / provide an adequate diet as instructed by the dietitian.
  • Calculates anthropometric data in order to provide information to the clinical dietitian using anthropometric measurements within established procedures.
  • Develops and / or revises nutritional care plans as directed by the dietitian to ensure patient receives needed nutrition care.
  • Completes Event Capture system data entry for statistical records.
  • Answers patient/caregiver and staff questions regarding the program.
  • Other duties as assigned by the clinical dietitian in the MOVE! Program.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Work Schedule: Part-time, 24 hours per week (4 days a week, daytime hours, occasional evenings 12:30pm -7:00pm)

Basic requirements: Education Requirement: Candidates must have successfully completed a course of study in an accredited college leading to an associate's degree in Dietetic Technology with an emphasis in Nutrition Care or the equivalent post-secondary education. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

None Beyond basic requirements.

GS-05:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression, with at least six (6) months related to the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to knowledge of human nutrition requirements in health and disease; gathering data from medical record and documenting information pertinent to nutritional care; monitoring and influencing the patients nutritional intake; providing nutritional education for selected groups of patients; interviewing patients and providing nutrition counseling; interacting and communicating orally with people from a variety of backgrounds; functioning effectively in a support position within a clinical dietetic section of general medical and surgical and/or psychiatric hospital.
OR
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completed of 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in Dietetics would also meets the requirements of this position (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).
GS-06:

Specialized Experience:
Possess 1 year of progressively responsible specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the field of clinical dietetic technology in which can successfully demonstrate the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position at this grade level. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: Demonstrating knowledge of human nutrition requirements in health and disease; gathering data from medical record and documenting information pertinent to nutritional care; monitoring and influencing the patients nutritional intake; providing nutritional education for selected groups of patients; interviewing patients and providing nutrition counseling; interacting and communicating orally with people from a variety of backgrounds; functioning effectively in a support position within a clinical dietetic section of general medical and surgical and/or psychiatric hospital. only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

Education: There is no educational substitution at this grade level.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates for CDT positions must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs):
  1. Knowledge of human nutrition requirements in health and disease.
  2. Ability to gather data from the medical record and document information pertinent to nutritional care.
  3. Ability to monitor and influence the patient's nutritional intake.
  4. Ability to provide nutrition education for selected groups of patients.
  5. Skill in patient interviewing and nutrition counseling.
  6. Ability to interact and communicate orally with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  7. Ability to function effectively in a support position within a clinical dietetic section of a general medical and surgical and/or psychiatric hospital.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
