Volunteer Program Associate
Job Title: Volunteer Program Associate

About Us: Since 1985, the Grand Canyon Trust has been a leading voice in regional conservation on the Colorado Plateau. From protecting the Grand Canyon from continued threats, to helping establish and protect national monuments in southern Utah, the Trust works tirelessly to protect the Colorado Plateauís remarkable landscapes, while respecting the rights of its Native peoples. We are a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to ensuring the regionís public lands, native species, communities, and cultures thrive. We are a dynamic team that values the ability to communicate regularly and collaborate on projects and initiatives.
About the Position: The Volunteer Program Associate will work with the Community Engagement Director to help design and implement volunteer projects for the Grand Canyon Trust with an emphasis on citizen science, stewardship, and advocacy. The position requires excellent communication skills, collaboration on a dynamic team, excitement about field work, enthusiasm for engaging volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skillsets, and a passion for conservation.
Position responsibilities:
Field Project Coordination (70%)
● Conservatively manage risk on volunteer trips in unfamiliar wilderness contexts
● Be resourceful, maintain a positive attitude, and ensure the well-being of volunteers for one to seven days, in a range of field conditions, weather, terrain, and environments
● Prepare meals for groups in a backcountry setting; manage care of equipment and camping gear
● During field season (April-September), supervise a field assistant in various trip-leading duties
● Work with Community Engagement Director and program staff to design, coordinate, and recruit for volunteer projects across the Colorado Plateau that support the Trustís strategic goals
● Develop educational materials for volunteers (in field and online formats) that might include safety orientations, data collection, restoration, monitoring, and advocacy skills (training will be given in these areas)
● Assist in the long-term envisioning of the volunteer programís direction and the creative development of new projects

Online Engagement (20%)
● Help to design and develop creative ways to harness volunteer energy for the organization beyond field projects
● Provide communications support and content for the Trustís Advocate magazine, board updates, reports to donors, volunteer newsletters, blog posts, website, and social media as needed
Administrative (10%)
● Assist Director with gear purchases and organization, emergency communication devices, budget, reporting, and database entry duties using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Salesforce software

Desired Qualifications:
● Demonstrated experience leading and caring for groups in a wilderness context
● Current wilderness medicine certification, and experience managing risk for groups
● Current driverís license and good driving record
● Track record of building and maintaining strong working relationships with coworkers and volunteers
● Excellent organizational, planning, follow-through, and communication skills
● Experience designing and delivering educational curriculum and activities
● Understanding of the scientific method and Colorado Plateau ecosystems
● Willingness to work long hours, including some evenings and weekends, when in the field. We recognize that many people have familial, ceremonial, or other personal obligations, and will do our best to honor your commitments by planning ahead and allowing for time off and a flexible schedule
● Commitment to leading with humility when entering communities and working with diverse cultures and partners
● Commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
