The University of Oregon (UO) seeks up to two new instructional designers to join a growing team of online education professionals. Online Education Instructional Designers collaborate with faculty to design pedagogically sound curricula for online courses. By means of group workshops as well as individual faculty consultations, instructional designers promote quality standards, high-impact educational practices, and effective use of technology for teaching and learning. These positions report to the Associate Vice Provost for UO Online. Successful candidates will work closely with other instructional designers, videographers and video producers, and UO’s Teaching Engagement Program to promote synergistic support for faculty who develop and deliver online courses at UO.
The Online Education Instructional Designer will serve as a specialist and expert resource, promoting effective online instruction through a variety of collaborative activities. Essential responsibilities include:
o Provide instructional design support to faculty for the development, delivery, and revision of online courses.
o Work with faculty to create robust online learning environments that enhance student engagement, utilize appropriate assessments, and scaffold progressive student understanding.
o Assist faculty in choosing appropriate tools and strategies to reach specific learning goals.
o Serve as project manager to coordinate support services and establish milestones for timely course design completion.
o Design and conduct workshops, classes, and trainings that emphasize learning goals first and technology second, in service of stated goals.
o Advise faculty in integrated course design, best practices, instructional technology, and quality standards.
o Collaborate with faculty to research, validate, and promote effective practices.
o Design and maintain online resources for faculty (e.g., online teaching tips, step-by-step guides, reference materials).
o Bachelor’s degree.
o 2 years of professional experience interpreting educational goals and developing effective pedagogical solutions.
o Demonstrated understanding of instructional methods and curricular innovations in higher education.
o Proficiency with learning management systems.
o Demonstrated skill with multimedia authoring tools.
o Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.
o Organization and management skills: ability to prioritize multiple projects and ability to manage projects from conception through completion.
o Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Ability to create content for print and web.
o Ability to learn new software with minimal time investment.
o Advanced degree.
o Experience working with faculty members, graduate employees, and students from diverse disciplines and cultures.
o Experience delivering training in a workshop format.
o Experience authoring content using principles of universal design.
o Experience applying Quality Matters standards.
o Experience teaching online.
o Knowledge of learning theories.
