Manager of Health & Safety Compliance

The Health & Safety Compliance Manager is an enterprise level role that is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of Health & Safety compliance programs designed to protect PetSmart’s assets, meet legislative requirements for compliance, and ensure a safe work environment within Stores, Distribution Centers, and Home Offices. This position proactively works to recommend, develop, and implement continuous improvement to safety programs and operational polices & procedures to reduce potential hazards and injuries. This position leads one direct report (Health & Safety Compliance Partner) and reports to the Director of Loss Prevention/Safety Strategy and Operations. This position is accountable for managing regulatory safety agency response and abatement and delivering safety goals and improvement in reduction in injuries across stores, DCs, and home offices accomplished through expertise, influence, and living our vision, mission, and values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor existing and evolving workplace safety legislation/regulations to ensure compliance across the PetSmart enterprise (Stores, Distribution Centers, and Home Offices)
  • Work/lead cross-functionally and independently to develop and implement safety policies & procedures that support our culture of safety, reduce hazards and the potential for injuries
  • Evaluate and update associate safety training programs to increase awareness & education
  • Partner internally and externally to ensure compliance with required recordkeeping & reporting (e.g. OSHA recordkeeping/reporting, EPCRA reporting)
  • Evaluate existing business practices to identify potential risks, provide recommendations to protect the safety of our assets, and meet regulatory compliance requirements
  • Present safety results, program impact, and continuous improvement progress to all levels of leadership
  • In partnership with safety regulatory agencies and internal partners, respond to and resolve notices of alleged hazards and complaints from safety regulatory agencies, including investigating, preparing written responses, and implementing necessary process enhancements
  • Oversee execution of Hazard Communication Program Plan (e.g. associate training, hazard classification, maintenance of Safety Data Sheet library, container labeling)
  • Complete comprehensive benchmarking studies as a component of making strategic recommendations for future programs and infrastructure to support continuously improving environmental, health & safety results at PetSmart
  • Perform store visits to validate execution and measure effectiveness of safety policies, procedures and programs
  • Subject matter expert for cross-functional business partner initiatives with potential impact to human safety
  • Provide effective communication on all Health & Safety related initiatives to ensure consistent understanding of, reason for, and expected results of each
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop control methods to reduce impact of identified hazards
  • Responsible for managing Health & Safety vendor relationships, contracts, and expenses

KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Management experience and leadership skills
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of workplace safety regulations and program elements (e.g. OSHA, Hazard Communication Program, Safety Data Sheets)
  • Ability to conduct and lead thorough workplace safety investigations
  • Ability to develop insightful, condensed presentations to communicate safety results and program impacts
  • Present information and respond to questions from groups of internal and external business partners at all levels of the organization
  • Consults and effectively partners with Field leadership and Home Office teams where applicable
  • Organizational and business communication skills, written and verbal
  • Exceptional written communication skills, including the ability to draft written responses to safety regulatory agencies
  • Able to exercise critical thinking and problem solving through defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Demonstrated success working autonomously as well as partnering cross-functionally to achieve results through teamwork
  • Individual must be flexible, with an ability to work in an independent, proactive manner, as well as part of a team

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or associated experience in Environmental, Health & Safety
  • Experience managing safety programs and compliance at the enterprise level
  • Root cause analysis and process improvement
  • Leadership of cross-functional initiatives
  • Five to ten years of safety industry experience

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Health & Safety related certifications/qualifications such as: CSP, ASP, CSHM, OHST, CESCO, CHMM (CSP preferred)
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training required
