Senior Director - Lithium Advanced Extraction Technologies Platform
Role Summary
The Platform Leader will drive alignment and execution of an integrated strategy to accelerate Albemarle’s development, piloting, and commercialization of advanced direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies. They will work across Albemarle functions and bridge organizational expertise to align priorities, build & focus resources (people & facilities), and speed DLE activities. Simultaneously, they will work externally to expand collaborations, establish new & deepen existing partnerships, and coordinate DLE investments.
This role will be part of the Lithium Technology organization reporting to the Chief Technology Officer with close working partnership with the Lithium Chief Operations Officer and our Process Technologies and Process Development teams. Furthermore, the role responsibilities will bridge across business both our Energy Storage and Specialties business units. The position will operate from our Charlotte, NC headquarters.
Key Responsibilities & Functions
Build & lead an integrated DLE platform that combines lithium resource growth objectives with leading edge chemistry & chemical process technologies
Collaborate across technology teams to evaluate, pilot, scale and adopt the best advanced technologies
Develop and mature metrics for assessing, ranking, and making tradeoff assessments related to technical performance, economics, and sustainability, tailoring analyses for local projects and specific technology pathways
Perform economic & business case analysis of DLE technologies and project scale economics (in collaboration with Resources, Engineering, Process Technologies, Extraction Technologies, Finance, M&A, etc.)
Leverage existing and extend new investment mechanisms with third party technology suppliers to enable evaluation and potential scale-up through to full deployment
Identify M&A and JV opportunities for DLE platform drawing up input from Resources, Technology, Process Technologies, Corporate M&A and Engineering teams
Nurture portfolio of early stage high-risk/reward DLE technology investments
Establish platform operational mechanisms including stakeholder input/management; establish Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) and track progress; lead communication & progress reviews
Drive DLE platform efforts through stage-gate process for evaluating and maturing pilots into projects into plants leveraging Albemarle’s Project Process
Own long-range planning with integration into the business planning processes including investment & resource needs.

Required Education and Experience
Minimum B.S. degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or Science related field
15+ years of technical leadership experience, including scaleup and commercialization of new products and processes
Experience working in chemicals, energy storage and/or automotive technologies
Strong organizational management and financial modeling skills
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Education and Experience
Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Science, Engineering, or related field
Experience in Energy Storage and/or Lithium based markets
Global operational leadership experience
Experience in a start-up and/or high growth business and/or dynamic market
