Alcorn State President and Head Coaches to be honored by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Alumni Association

Alcorn State, MSOn August 4, 2011 the Mississippi Gulf Coast Alcorn State University Alumni Association will be hosting a reception honoring:
Dr. M. Christopher Brown, II, the 18th President of Alcorn State University
Melvin Spears,Jr. Head Football Coach
The event will take place at Mary Mahoney's Restaurant in Biloxi, Mississippi from 6 pm-8 pm.Admission is $25.00 per person which will include heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks.Mary Mahoney's Restaurant is located at 116 Rue Magnolia Biloxi, MS 39530 (Hwy. 90 across from the Beau Rivage).
About the Honorees
Dr. M. Christopher Brown, II took office as the 18th President of Alcorn State University in January 2011.Dr. Brown brings a wealth of educational leadership from such universities as Fisk University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.He was recently named to the advisory council for the American Commonwealth Project (ACP).Dr. Brown received his B.S. in elementary education from South Carolina State University and his M.S. Ed. in educational policy and leadership from the University of Kentucky.He received a Ph. D. in higher education from The Pennsylvania State University with a cognate in public administration and political science.
Melvin Spears, Jr. is a 1983 graduate of Alcorn State University who was named the Head Football Coach in February 2011.Spears obtained a B.S. in computer science and applied mathematics from Alcorn State.He earned a Master's in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University in 1997.
A standout quarterback and wide receiver during his playing days at Alcorn State under legendary head coach Marino Casem, Spears was officially inducted into the Alcorn State University Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
Luther Riley is the newly named Men's Basketball Coach at the Academic Resort.Riley received as associate of arts degree in liberal arts in 1992 from East Central Community College.He earned his B.S. in health and physical education at Mississippi Valley State in 1995 and a M.S. in secondary education from Alcorn State in 1998. At MVSU, he was a standout guard for the Delta Devils basketball team under the leadership of Lafayette Stribling.
Riley is also a NIKE Certified Training Specialist.
Tonya Edwards is entering her fourth season as Head Women's Basketball Coach.For the past two seasons, Coach Edwards has led the Lady Braves to the SWAC Tournament.She is a 1990 graduate of the University of Tennessee where she received a B.S. in Sports Management with a minor in Business. During her time as a Lady Vol, she was a part of two National championships (1987 and 1989) under the guidance of Pat Summitt. She was also the 1987 MVP of the Final Four.
Barret Rey is approaching his third year as Baseball Coach. This past season, Rey led the Braves to their first SWAC Title and was named Coach of the Year.He received both his B.S. in Psychology in 1997 and M.S. in Therapeutic Recreation in 2003 from Southern University.Rey was a part of three SWAC Championships (1993, 1996 and 1997) under the tutelage of Roger Cador.
